Front Axle Repair Kit
Dears
I want to repair my front axle ( G-463). I found this kit on the internet
http://www.eurotruck-importers.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&prod...
1- As my left front wheel is leaking,I don't see the oil seals in this kit
2- The bearing item ( 56 ? ) also required
Thanks
Ayman
There is no such thing as a kit by Mercedes Benz. This so called kit is a compellation by the vendor to sell these items as a kit for the layman's understanding.
Considering the job you intend doing will cost some 5.5 hrs in labour, it would be prudent to replace the King Pin (K/P) bearings as a matter of course.
Items for the K/P include 50, 53 and 56. You will need additionally, gasket 86, seal 83, seal 65 and items listed as 59 and 62.
Not shown on your illustration is CV boot and clips which you may need and the only way to know you need these is when you have stripped down.
The kit has not included the locking nuts and not illustrated on EPC picture you have downloaded; you may need them as required.

Sorry to interject on this thread;
Gav, any chance you could compile a similar list for the 460 front axle, please?
Am I right in thinking that some of the front and rear parts are interchangeable (as per landrovers)? I know one is disc and the other drum, but bearings and inner seals?
cheers
Jamie

460 Rear Hub Seal kit with Bearing is A601 350 04 68 same both side and the same as the T1 Van (single rear wheel)
Hub end gasket is A601 357 50 80 same both sides but comes in the above kit
Front and Rear Axle Pinion Seals used to be a twin seal (inner / outer) but replaced by a single double seal A017 997 55 47 which is T1 again and both the same
Don't forget the collapsable Spacer Tube in the Pinion that needs to be the correct torque and that there are 2 types of Pinion Nut A601 351 00 72 Early and A601 351 01 72 Late
Front or Rear Axle Pan Gasket is A601 351 00 80 ... T1 again and both the same
Front and Rear Axle Drain and Fill plugs A352 997 00 32 all 4 the same
463 seems all the same in general with exception of the Front Axle Fill and Drain Plugs? A000 997 62 32
Keep them coming....
Going to squirrel this info away for my 460, cheers Gav!
Hi
Got your vin...
I don't know that they are thinner, if the bearing etc are the same they can't be?
I do know that nearly all the 463's shafts are longer by 50mm to make the track wider
Will post up the 461 list for yours later
Where in the world are you?
Gav
Thanks Gav.
Thanks Gav.
You're welcome Jimbo ;)
Hi Ayman
Your 1995 461.338 series 290GD is the same set up as 460 series (late)
It has the standard narrow track axles that the 460's had.
===============================================================================
It would seem that the very early production 70's 460's had one type of seal set up... quite unique.
All the later 80's onwards 460's had the one listed in this thread...
A few late 80's 463's had the late 460 set up...
Most of the 90's 463's had the type again listed above with wider track...
All the 80's / 90's / early 00's 461's had the later 460 type as above
I have not bothered looking at any late 00's 461's or 463 from the 00's due to lack of required rebuilds and low volumes out there...
It would appear that even the 460 / 463 are the same in all the major parts, only the Hub Nut and Socket the Hub Nut Lock Washer differ along with a Hub Dust Rubber Seal...

Thanks Rakesh, you are an encyclopedia in G class !
I'm interested to know how you gained your knowledge ................
Ayman
I am not unique with knowledge on G-Wagens, there are some others' who choose to keep lower profiles with knowledge too but in my case what I have learned and gained experience is through working on them full time for some 13 years.
Even dealership mechanics have not had as much exposure to G-Wagens as I can claim as they would see a few, depending on dealerships area and local G-Wagen population. The dealership mechanic do have an advantage and that is they have ready and easy access to any information they want where we have, had to beg for information and use as many available contacts, use favours to gain our information. This information is available provided one pays for the fees asked. And largely, knowledge has been gained through experience.
..............................Could you please send me a photo for
W460589000700 Axle Hub Nut Tool ?
Ayman
It is possible to grind out the profile onto an old socket using the lock nut as template.
Sorry for the delay in posting photos, I have only just learned on how to post links.
The is no maintenance as such for the axles except checking for diff oil level every 12,000 miles and the checking correcting of grease levels in hubs every two years. Assuming wheel bearing play and king pin play will be checked at every 12,000 miles; that is all which is scheduled.

Thanks Gav, I will send you the VIN
up to my knowledge, 461 & 463 have the same axle but the brake discs are different
460's axle has thinner shafts than those in the 463
