On my travels I have seen G-Wagens with raised tops in fibre glass
Has any one got any information on possible sources for these
A pop-up lid would be very useful
My main interest is getting rid of my leaky sun-roof

Schmüde hardtop?

Fillan,

I don't quite get it. The only similar thing that I've ever seen are older cabrio versions of the G which have been fitted with an aftermarket fiberglass hardtop from a German company called Schmüde.

Naturally, such hardtop would fit only older versions of the cabrio G (pre- electric hood) and it costs a fortune ( new it's about € 6,000 or so).

There were also a batch of early G-Wagens specially produced for the German Borders' Police which sported a circular hatch in the roof that looked like it was there to enable quick evacuation in case of attack, but it doesn't look to me that this is what you're after.

DC produced the safari roof or "tropendach". Sales price was 3000 DM each. Several month ago, someone offered it to me for a LWB.

The Idea was to have air between the original roof and the fiber glas one. This cooled down the cabin area.

Since air conditioning is available, these roof are not produced any longer.

Maybe you have seen a rare tropendach.

Dutch G Van

On the Netherlands Mercedes Site they have these real weird SWB 463's that they call a "Van" with a higher roof and no rear seat. Don't know if its made out of fibreglass though and I don't think they do a LWB version either. Check out these pics....

Those CRAZY Dutch............... Men.

You would have thought a LWB would have been better, although more expensive.

Adrian.

Pop top

There used to be a company in Leicester but then moved to Devon I think called AER Developments who would make a pop-up top to fit your vehicle. I used them twice for Home built Motorhomes - a transit and a bedford CF. Not sure if they still around though but will have a look. They were very neat and easy to DIY and gave about 6ft standing room in a van..

This has to do with the crippling purchase tax for cars in Holland.... G-Wagens are among the vehicles that can be exempt provided that they are higher than a given figure, That's why G-Wagens are factory converted with that higher roof.
