Dear all,

I am in the market for an exhaust silencer for my SWB 1989 460 300GD. VIN number WDB46033227066252. When I look online for same I see that there are two types. One for 300GD’s up to 1988 and the second for 300GD’s from 1989 to 1991. I think I remember reading somewhere that later 460 models had a plastic fuel tank fitted. I am not very mechanically minded but I know that my truck has a steel tank. (I can tell this because plastic doesn’t rust) I  therefore think my truck might have sat around for a few years before being registered in 1989. Would anyone be able to hazard a guess as to whether the truck needs the silencer for the earlier model or the later model or would either do?

Regards,

Colm

Re: Exhaust Silencer

Get a stainless steel one fabricated. It will last forever and you can forget about it

Re: Exhaust Silencer

There are indeed two silencers for the 300GD.

Part number A460 491 04 01, described as a Muffler is valid to chassis number reading to .........008350.

Part number A460 491 05 01 008351 is valid to chassis number from ..........008351.

Given your chassis number ending is .......066252; it is the latter part number you need. The tail pipe ends are affected by chassis number. Not knowing for sure if the plastic tank would have any bearing on the exhaust; my guess is that you could fit either the earlier or latter mufflers but the tail pipe has to match to the muffler, these are not inter-changeable as there would a difference in the angle of the out put pipe from the muffler. It would not surprise me if the angle of the input pipe of the muffler is different.

Keep to the designated part numbers as designated by the manufacturer.

Go aftermarket stainless steel and go side exit. I have one fitter in Meath who CAN do.

Re: Exhaust Silencer

Thanks for that information Rakesh.

There is a guy here in Dungannon who has started making exhausts in a small engineering works and I will see what he says about a silencer and custom made side exit. I might be in contact Eddie about that guy in Meath but I will try Dungannon first. I wouldn’t really trust this thing to Meath and back. The truck already has a stainless steel front exhaust section as it has a turbo bodged onto it. I presume by side exit, it would exit at the front of the drivers rear wheel. Would the MOT inspectors have anything to say about that?

Colm. Not sure about the MOT views on side exit but our NCT guys don't seem to have a problem with it so long as the car passes it's emissions test.

Re: Exhaust Silencer

Cheers for that advice Eddie. I have an appointment to take it to the local fabricator tomorrow to hear what he can do for me. I suspect however, that I will be in contact with Gav on Tuesday with my Credit Card number.smiley

Re: Exhaust Silencer

Colm.

I once had two systems made by Canavans in Lurgan, both 300GD. Their bending equipment at the time was not as good as the guys in Meath have but maybe that has improved. They could do a stainless side exit on a body-lifted LWB G but not on a standard SWB G. I happened to remove the LWB side exit system this week and it is still perfect, probably 5 years old now.

Worth checking them out.

Eddie.

Re: Exhaust Silencer

Hi all,

My G wagon is now sporting a new exhaust, supplied and fitted by a local custom exhaust shop for a two, yes I repeat a two figure sum. My old exhaust needed replaced from approx 2 feet beyond the manifold back. Granted the new exhaust is mild steel as opposed to stainless steel, and I did not follow advice to change the exhaust to side exit as opposed to rear exit, and it now has two small silencers now as opposed to one big one - but I am one happy customer.

Regards,

Colm
