Engine Noise
I have some engine noise that i would like to get rid of. it could be a engine tapit that needs attention or the timing chain might need to be adjusted, but it has 150K plus miles so should it be changed. I also wanted the injectors services.
Can someone recomend a specialist who could look at it.
For this type of work I find that any good garage with MB engine experience will know, and be grateful of the access and space to work on it! Hopefully there are some other members out west who can suggest where.
Generally, engine tapping can be hard to isolate, especially on diesel. I've had exhaust blows sound just like tapping. Not sure if timing chain is a big thing.
Are you using the right Oil? I remember putting a newer synthetic type oil in, caused lots of rattle, but older 15/40 seems to work well, it would be unusual for timing chain wear at that relatively low mileage, dodgy injectors can also cause rattle. Avoid a certain engine specialist in Cheshire!
Stick some LUCAS oil in it it fors wonders! Might stop the rattling
Assuming it's an OM603 6 cylinders
And you refer to tappet noise then quite possible a hydraulic lifter bucket or multiple have an issue
New thin oil will not help this and an older spec heavy oil as mentioned is better
That series of engine does sometimes need the buckets changing .. is the noise apparent on start up and quieten down when warmed up?
MB specify timing chain is changed at 100k mileage intervals although after nearly 35 years in the MB network I can't remember ever changing one on mileage
Seen them changed a lot less mileage due to wear or stretch but generally the 6 cylinders were OK
Seen some let go in a big way too and shatter the timing case but rare
Key to all MB diesels of the era... oil change every 6k and go forever... neglecting this by missing service or extending the intervals and you will get pain
Nice engine, want to swap for a ge300 1991 K plate
