Engine hood / bonnet acoustic blanket
I need to replace the acoustic blanket on the underside of my bonnet as the old one had become tatty over the years. Not surprisingly Ive noticed a considerable increase in engine noise both in and outside the car without it.
Has anybody had experience with any of the aftermarket products such as Vibrasorb ?
They can be spruced up, Take it out and glue it all back together with spray contact adhesive LOTS, taking care not to get it on the face (the blanket not yours) then get a can of matt black primer B&Q £7 and spray the face liberally
When its dry the paint stiffens it up nicely. When you put it back in don't loop it through the retaining strips just put them over the top of the mat. I've rescued three like this including the one that was dropping out on mine at the AGM

Is a new one expensive?

Thanks Gordon may give it a go. I was going to order a new one which as pointed out by others is approx £150. But the originals are not very thick and I thought by using an aftermarket blanket it would soften the cabin noise.
Incidentally which adhesive would you recommend.

Spray contact adhesive that carpet fitters use, make sure it's gone off before you press the bits together,

And make sure the glue you get is heatproof. Some of the cheaper glues aren't.
same issue happens on (LR's for example) when people try to glue the roof lining back up, or glue soundproof directly to the inside of the roof.... the heat from the sun on top of the roof melts the glue and it all falls off again.
And for those who read this and think about an alternative... Don't buy Noise Killer's product. I did and the glue remains tacky and the 'heat resistant' under bonnet blanket then falls off - especially as the engine heat effective turns the glue back to liquid :-) I Dynamat'd mine - along with most of the interior and am very happy with it. although I must admit if I knew the Noise killer was going to fall off I would have used the silver version. Hopefully pics will show of dynamite and noise killer I put on. Ta Simon
I always find the Mercedes-Benz glue (part number A0009899271) very good for sticking bonnet insulation. Its about £19.00 a pot and one pot should be sufficient.
I used Car Builder Solutions Contact adhesive "ADHCON" .. it is £11.40 iVAT per litre tin so still have some glued into the tin! It goes off and is not heat sensitive (well in Scotland for a winter car!). Still there 8 years on... MOT tonight =:-o

Hi Howard,
I completely matted out my Pinz from various acounstic mats that I bought from Wrights Off Road. They supply kits for Landies, but will also sell you the matts (they have several different ones for different parts of the car) by the sheet (4'x8' usually or metric equivalent). If you're prepared to put in some elbow grease, i.e. cut the matting to exactly where you want it to be, then this stuff realy does work. I can actually hold a conversation in my Pinz as we rumble down the Motorway these days......mind you hands free blue tooth phone is still a bit of a struggle!

I had a new one fitted to my SL a while back, it's OEM MB and with all the bits it was around 150 squideroonies. Just after it was fitted someone on the MBclub board pointed out that there are better cheaper ones about. Not sure if that's the case for G's though
