Engine difference between G 280 CDI and G 300 CDI
I'm interested in purchase a used G-Wagen and transform it into a long range travel / Expedition veichle.
I'm confused about which model best suit my needs and is more reliable.
I found an interesting G 280 CDI EDITION30.Pur with Offroad Package 2. I was tempted to buy it but a guy warn me that it's better to choose the G 300 Professional because the engine is more reliable thanks to a factory added oil cooler and a different ECU that allow better handling of the faults and limp mode.
Which in your opinion is the more reliable engine ? Which model you suggest to buy ?
Thanking in advance for any advice,
Mario
Hello Mario,
It may be possible an answer may not be got from the UK as we do not have; as far as I am aware any 280CDI's G-Wagens' in the UK.
A clue to your answer is to see what reports come out from the saloon versions of these engines being employed. Remember G-Wagen engines are somewhat similar to saloon models save for the the fact when employed in G-Wagens the compression ration is reduced a little to compromise for off-roading performance.
the following could be of interest: http://www.mercedes-g-entdecker.com/
Interesting fact that, the 24v/12v on the 280CDI.... I wondered why some of the professional Gs I'm watching on mobile.de had the 24v socket on the back of the cubby box, but the really nice green 300Cdi professional I looked at, didn't have it.
has nothing to do with the choice of engine but when built: from mid-2011 12v only.
^^^^ Ah OK....
24v could be useful.... less amperage draw on a winch, and decent coockers/heaters or fridges can be fitted... 24v stuff always seems better and more powerful, probably as that's what most trucks use.
Thanks all for the advice.
The Entdecker transformation is simply outstanding but it's a really expensive vehicle.
It's actually no longer available because G280/G300 production was stopped due to the engine Euro 6 emission failure, now mandatory for new vehicle sold in Europe.
