Ok guy's what woud you say would be the best engine to put into a w460 swb.

One that would fit to the gearbox with out mods.

Give good power and ok mpg.

Is the om606 fit and play?

Re: Engine

ERRRRRRRR NO!

OM606 is very indepth

OM605 not much easier although it is and probably more suited to the SWB

OM602/OM662 also worth considering

Assume it is starting as a 230 M102 with manual Getrag 5 speed then box could be used

230 M102 is left side starter like all the OM60X

280 M110 300 OM617 are both right side starter so box change required

Re: Engine

There isn't any straight forward swaps

300GD OM617 to OM617 turbo probably the only easy one

Re: Engine

Even putting a 602/605/662 onto that box will require moving the box and altering the prop as your putting an extra cylinder in of similar capacity

Re: Engine

Thanks Gav

I'm thinking about putting something with big power in if i'm going to do it. Don't think the 230 box would handle it' Thinking about the 220 cdi 6 speed box? What's your thoughts

Re: Engine

If you're doing it then OM606 is probably biggest power and most doable

M113 V8 can be done and OM613cdi also but a lot more complexity and expense

606 with 6 speed is good... I have conversion flanges to take 6 speed output to 8 hole G flange for prop

To do a 606 properly with big power will probably be £5-6k plus even if you do it all yourself

Re: Engine
Gav knows... Long years ago our SWB had a 606 diesel engine (with a pugged up hole in the sump) and an automatic gearbox (with a non-pugged up hole) bodged in by a bunch of incompetent rascals (cf. P.N.) somewhere near Belfast. Once we'd invested in the leaky stinkbox - with potential - things were tidied up near Blackpool and a 6 speed manual gearbox from an SLK replaced the comatose autobox. Fast forward to 2023 and a legendary character not far from Bristle has sorted out all the mechanicals and we are (well, we always were, but now we speak from happy experience) firm advocates of a properly set up 606. As Gav mentions, it is neither a simple five minute nor a cheap job. However, it is worth it. (ioho)

Re: Engine
P.S. As can be seen all over the interweb, one can get crazy, crazy power out of a 606. We have not taken that path. Our 606 (5.5 pump elements and nothing supersonic) has plenty of useable power as it is. We hope to enjoy a long and peaceful life together.
