Help again please ...

I already have a dead tach, clock and ABS light - but now the radio and heater fan have gone too.  All fuses are good so I am thinking from previous comments that all the earth points need a scrubbing - but where are they?

Any advice will be gratefully received!

Alan

Re: Dry earth?

Gav - the 460 has gone, the 463 300GDL is all that remains now.  VIN 463-328.27075626

Re: Dry earth?

Have you checked the OVP Relay fuse(s)?

Looks like this, is located with fuses under glove box

I don't have one of those ... just a row of standard fuses   sad

Pretty sure 463 has an OVP....

Re: Dry earth?

you need to remove the two philips screws on the top corners of the black. metal fuse panel. it will then drop down on a hinge and reveal all the relays behind it.

Behind or above the fuse board on the left footwell

Re: Dry earth?

I knew that - just testing ... or just asleep.  And whilst I am there I can check the ruddy grounds as well.

Stupid question #1:  how will I know if the fuse is dead?  Multi-meter and my electronics engineer?

Re: Dry earth?

Hi, usually it's pretty obvious when it's blown, remove the fuse and you'll see the wire burnt

Re: Dry earth?

The 463 definitely has an OVP, it's with the other relays. It supplies the abs, tach and something else.

You need to be able to use a multimeter to be able to diagnose the electrical faults.

There is a little slot for checking fuses on the LHS of the fuse board. Insert the fuse and the light comes on

Re: Dry earth?

Gentlemen - checked the OPV relay fuse, it was blown; replaced and nothing has changed (and it has not blown again).  Faulty relay?  I have an electronics engineer here - who usefully is also a petrol head ... instructions he will follow!

The question becomes - does anyone know what the pin outs on the OPV relay do?

Numbered - 87E, 87E, 87L, 30, 30A, 15 & 31

By that I meant the relay not the fuse - even I can spot a dead fuse (with my specs on!).

OK - found the wiring diagram in the members' area.  Relay definitely dead but shorting the wires behind it brought nothing back to life - so it looks as though it must an earthing issue.

There's actually a built-in fuse tester with a lamp on the fuse panel.

Re: Dry earth?

Hi Al

Check all fuses and clean them up as well as contacts in fuse box

Mine was damp with moisture and opv did not blow a fuse when i replaced it but still no rev counter etc

I cant remember fuses that are linked in but when i claened all fuses and holder everything was fine

Fitted old opv ralay and it was still u/s

Its been fine for 10k since i cleaned fuses and contacts

The earths were a bit scabby but all were down to ground 100%

Check fuses and clean contacts of all fuses

Use some fine wet and dry say 600 grit and a junior hacksaw blade or equivelent size piece of metal

Im sure all will be good

Dirty contacts equal high resistance and false readings when load is applied

Re: Dry earths?

Guys - curious story:

OPV replaced with new variety (2 x 10amp fuses) which of course has redundant elements on a 91 463.  No changes.  Buckets of WD40 on all earth/ground points > no change.  Then on a long drive the tach suddenly comes to life!  Still no clock ... and god knows what the ABS is doing or not.

Re: Dry earths?

Have you tried checking the connections on the rear of the instrument binnacle? The connectors on the printed circuit boards are not the best and it could be a problem with bad contacts here. If your ABS is working, then OVP relay is fine. However, if your radio is also playing up. It might be a bad ignition switch. This provides power to the radio in position-1.

Yep - had the binnacle out .  OVP relay is brand new.  Radio/heater blower recently went awol, clock has not worked for 6 years.
