Drag Link part number needed.....
My 1989 280GE has developed a "clunking" noise coming from the front nearside. I started to notice it when manoeuvring for parking, then found it was most noticeable when stationary while swinging the steering wheel from side to side - could also feel the clunk through the brake pedal when doing this.
Mechanic investigated and tells me that one of the ball joint ends on the drag link has lots of free-play and needs replacing (can't remember which end he said, I'll verify with him tomorrow). Can I just get the joint on its own or will I need to get the whole drag link complete? Can someone enlighten me as to what I need to ask MB when I speak to them to order the part.
My chassis number is WDB46023327065496
Any advice much appreciated - Suzie
Hi Suzie
Front Axle Steering Drag Link (Steering Box to Axle) Complete
A463 460 01 05 £254.58 + VAT
One end is crimped on and can't be swapped
The other is adjustable but a few types and really you need the part number off the old bar to identify exactly.
The vehicle will almost certainly have had at least one new bar in its life already and with a good clean the numbers are usually still there!! painted / printed towards the middle, something similar to the number quoted above.
The ends are available in the main..
£40 - £60 + vat is a guide
Most will replace the bar if its old as the crimped end will not be far behind in terms of wear, if its has a newer bar then replacing the end will buy a few years more usually
PM me if you need help, have a bar in stock for dispatch today, can do a deal and free postage
PM me before 2pm if you need help

Long posting about this. http://www.gwoa.co.uk/node/4666?page=page=page=1
I too need one of these drag links (between steering box and passenger front hub) after a MOT advisory but as they are RHD specific they are not common (and a funny curve at one end so not just a distance between ends thing). I dug around and found that
A4634600105 Drag link = Lenkstange in German
Picture here - http://avto.pro/zap-A4634600105-MERCEDES-45027/
This replaces A4634630615 and A4604635515
.. and that while you can replace the passenger end.. there are at least 3 types so MB want you to buy the complete thing.
http://www.online-teile.com/mb/index.php German online shop .. do them at MB prices (327 Euro)
http://www.carparts-pros.com/page_5_1.php Bavarian Taxi Purchasing Company Ltd ... do a copy at £156 delivered or £232 for MB OEM
.. some more digging. ZF's brand Lemforder/Lemfoerder/Lemförder are probably the OEM supplier and their part number is 1144401 which I can get for as low as 140 Euro in France.. but they will not sell to UK. Local importer are http://www.allgermanparts.co.uk/info/lemforder.html but that will need an enquiry.
There is a English ZF site that lets you check https://webcat-services.zf.com/index.asp?LKZ=D&PKW=1&SPR=4&EINSPNR=32,14,1632,1614 ... and this confirms the OEM part numbers.
I will try my local motor factor now I have a part number.
.. Gav .. thanks for the work and sorry to bring up cheaper parts.. but due to a mild winter I did 50 miles last year so hard to justify!

No worries, that's what the GWOA and forum is all about, options and advice
Drag Link is however supplied from stock on Mon, Received Tue and Hopefully fitted Wed!!!
£262 all in delivered....
Very many thanks to Gav for his help - super speedy service. Spoke to Gav Monday afternoon, part arrived Tuesday and my mechanic fitted it yesterday. Job Done!
I will be posting a follow-up on this subject though, as I've discovered that I'd paid a certain self-styled "G Wagen Expert" in Ireland for replacing the drag link only a year ago, as part of his so-called refurbishment of my G. It's evident from the original drag link removed, that it was certainly not replaced anytime in it's recent past!
Agreed. Having been down this road before - I wish you the best of luck!

Now that sounds like an idea!

hi susie, i have just driven a g wagen worked on by the same 'clown'
the owner was told by the 'clown' to expect perfection after having a 'restoration' in their workshops.
the work standard was actually shockingly bad and surprise surprise .... the drag link (you have found to be totally worn out and obviously the original or very old) well this g wagen is also supposed to of been given a full inspection and renovation from this same 'person' the link is the original and has split and holed ball joint gaiters also the adjustment collar and locknuts are totally seized and heavily rusted - some 'renovation' and very much not 'perfection'
Thanks have PM'd you
