Re: door seals

Peter

Are we talking door to body seals, or door to window seals?

Good link.

looks like they may have a suitable or even better type. But for the W463, you will have to forgo the fabric trim on the inner part, ulness you can somehow combine/ or re-use  that part from your existing ones.

Re: door seals
Hi Alex I am sure Gordon will be on soon... but in my experience the rear door seal is either a fab yourself from something like one of the suppliers from the above reply... or circa £200 from Merc... and they don't last and/or help with the door fit. I just spent 4 hours trying to get mine to fit better - perfect without the seal... not good with it back in place. You find a cheaper alternative, please let me know :-)) Simon Small world - I will be using the G to come to Bristol this week!

Re: door seals
Hi Ian To be honest for door seals now I would use one of the aftermarket seal suppliers who support the classic car market - You can get the same quality and as you say buy it by the meter. I have had front door seals from Merc and they come the same so you have to cut them to shape (for which a plumbers plastic pipe cutter is ideal - given the metal core they tend to contain) But - and I'm sure you know this - the rear door is a made to fit single piece job. That said mine (new 4 years ago) is in such poor shape already that it is not helping with door fit, so I might try and aftermarket DIY job using a slightly different profile and just 'adjust' the corners in :-) Best Simon

Re: door seals

The front door seals   We cut the damaged portion off and put them in in two peices with a join four inches up on either door pillar, we will run out of used ones at some stage!  The rear door seal we use the genuine one piece jobbie from Merc, they work fine but they must be fitted properly and the door has to be adjusted properly with all the catches and locating lugs in good condition. People complain about the back doors edpecially with them having 35 kilos of wheel hung on it, but if everything is in good order and good adjustment they're fine.

Re: door seals
Hi Gordon I am one of the back door complainers :-) Mine has a completely new rear end on it - which is OEM from merc and to a 463 pattern, so has the locating lug hols in the frame... but it still has the old door which had some corrosion to the bottom edge so the seal will not locate along the bottom edge. The panel guys decided the rear end set up in the arch was poor in terms of corrosion protection so have plated one of the access points you could use to get at the bottom hinge (you can via the light cluster but need one of those slim snap-on flexible head drivers.. And of course I have mounted my alloy wheel complete with BFG all terrain on the back door. Bit heavier than standard - but more importantly stands further out so more leverage.. I got it set almost right without the wheel and seal on (I am told you fit it without the seal first. But with the seal you can see daylight through the top outermost - from the hinge side.... which irritates me. This is all a very long way of saying I might try to pop over (still scheduled for London on Thursday) and get a view of you what I need to get it sorted - other than someone who knows what he is doing... But I have a feeling a new seal and potential the right locating lug (this seems positioned to pull the top edge of the door in on the hinge side?) will be required. Must make that trip to you one way or the other :-)) Best Simon
