My new acquisition has an identical problem to all my previous cars. The squeak, rattle, noise from  the drivers door area when on any bumpy ground or uneven roads. I cannot pin down where the noise comes from but it must be a common issue. I thought about using a silicon lubricant around the door seal but I don't know if that is the cause. Any answers?

Re: Door noise

hi Bruce,

It is most likely your doorlock (ALL 3 of mine have had this problem and my present one still has it). There are two probable causes: your lock isn't shutting the doors close enough because the door seals are worn, or it is not adjusted properly. In iether case a temporary fix is just to put PTFE lubricant all over the door lock. The noise will come back and then just coat it again until the next time. The only reason I mention it like this is because I have been doing this for the last 6 years to my current G. The actual problem on mine are the door seals, but they are horrendously expensive to replace (many many hundreds for a full set) and I can think of better places to spend the money.

Adrian, a thought, can you get a volume discount if several members wanted to buy these door seals en masse?

Hope that helps,

Ph

Re: Door noise

Check the door alignment with the body. The closing edge of the door should be proud by about 1mm. In many cases it's a  lot more than this, as the door-lock striker has moved or slipped. Adjustment will fix the issue, raising it a little also helps support the door weight, reducing the up and down movement of the door, which is mostly what causes the squeaking.

It's a similar story for the rear door, but in this case, the wedge-shaped,  lower sticker will have worn and needs replacing.

Re: Door noise

Perfect, thank you both and whilst I have your attention there is a strange chuffing noise almost like a manifold gasket blowing slightly when the engine is under load that seems to come from behind the instrument binnacle or steering wheel.if you rev the engine  and listen from outside or underneath the vehicle it's very difficult to determine the sound but it is almost as though some soundproofing or a rubber panel grommet  has been removed or damaged. I am fairly sure it is on to manifold gasket blowing and just wondered if anybody else has experienced this .

Re: Door noise

Might be the brake-servo, which is directly on the other side of the fire-wall.

Re: Door noise

I take it you've already removed all the carpet and sound deadening material in the footwell to make sure there are no holes in the footwell.

The exhaust system is very close to the other side of the firewall there (on my 300GE at least). There should be a heat shield between the exhaust and firewall - check that is still there and not rattling. If it's not there (I think a previous owner had removed mine to stop the rattling) then the firewall gets VERY hot. That can burn off the underseal and paint which in turn can cause the firewall to rust through.

Re: Door noise

the original exhaust heat-shield material was a kind of fibre-board covered in a sheet of baco-foil. This had a tendency to disintegrate. The replacement is made of dimpled aluminium (or aluminised-steel) sheet. it's not cheap from MB (about £90 a piece and there are two sections)

Re: Door noise

I think I have found the problem which is a tiny blow at the main down pipe join combined with a damaged steering column gaiter which will transfer the noise into the rear of the instrument binnacle. No nasty injector seals or cracked manifolds as yet!!
