Hi,

Took my 460 SWB 300GD offroad for the first time today, fitted with MT-tyres and was feeling very confident as I had driven this site several times before with my 230GE with AT-tyres and had no problems whatsover. But this time it was different..... I can put up with the very'leisurely' performance on-road but My G failed hillclimbs due to not enough power while landrovers, suzukis and lada flew past me, VERY annoying!!
Tried 2nd low first but it just stalled whilst 1st low didn't give me enough speed. I am by no means an experienced offroader so I may be doing something wrong.(probably)
Does anybody else have this problem with the diesel or is mine just very lazy and if it is and I want more power what route should I take: Turbo? engineconversion(my neighbour has a large scrapyard, very handy) better airfilter? Please advise as I do not want that experience again!!!
Also I struggle to make 70 one the motorway, is that normal? This car has done 95000 mls(verified) but mainly pulling a horsetrailer, that must have been fun!!
Thanks for reading all the way through my rant.

Regards.

Richard.

Ps. feeling better now.....

Strange!

I had a 460 300 GD SWB Manual for almost 8 years and in my experience it offered the best off-road performance of all older Gs. And I mean it, not only better than the 230 GE but also than the much more powerful 280GE. The latter has its top torque at 4,250 revs which is quite a lot off-road

Mine that the engine totally rebuilt by an ex MB-factory engineer and had loads of torque at low range. It did 80 mph given a sufficiently long straight (2 or three million miles, that is). There were very few gradients that could not be tackled in second low, to the point that I don't think that I have ever used first other than to go downhill.

Obviously, the places where I managed to get my G to pass where often unpassable by any Suzukis, LR, Nivas et al, bar the heavily modified ones.

And yes, the first thing I would do is to replace the airfilter for a brand new one

Diesel power

I would add to that and make it a K&N filter as when I made the change (cost about £55) it made all of the differance to my old 300GD. I managed 85mph everyday on the M3 to and from London returning 26mpg, not bad I thought.
As for other things to look for, when were the fuel filters last changed? and there also could be a small amount of air in the fuel system ???
Are the tyres that are on the car road tyres the same size as original as if they are off roaders or bigger then they will slow you down on the road.
Hope that this is a help
All the best

speed (or not)

I have 2 x 300GD's both LWB, the old (84) goes like a train and would pull a house down up to its max 60mph, the newer(92) is much worse but goes faster (so far 75mph), the difference is the old one has a 4speed box, it also does 26mpg versus 22mpg on newer one, the new one is booked in at TB turbos next Tuesday so I will let you know how different it goes, I'll try a K&N next.

Thank you all for the quick replies! This forum is fantastic.
As soon as I read the first reply I went out and bought a new airfilter(£19), it is a replacement make. If that doesn't do the trick I will get a K&N. After looking on the net the cheapest I could find was £155 which seems a bit steep! Where can I buy it for £55?
How do I make sure there is no air in the fuelsystem?
I can recall that on my old diesel citroen there was a little handpump, is it the same on a G and would that do the trick?
Thanks again for all the advise
regards

Richard

Diesel trouble?

Try changing oil and filter,Fuel filter ,Air filter and run injector cleaner through, twice.
I had a 460 and it did 85mph flatout on the flat.My '92 463 does just under 100 flat out at 5000 rpm on the flat although it has done over 200k miles so is nice n run in now.
I also find that a good thrashing for a few weeks improves things for me..................there again I do blow the odd engine so maybe best to stick to a good service!
I must say i prefer my 280 gel off road as it is much more responsive and being auto it never loses momentum !

In your 460 series 300 GD the handpump must be to one side of the Bosch injection pump. Since you'll replace the fuel filter you'll have to bleed the air in the system. Just undo the handle of the pump anti-clock wise and operate it until you get a steady flow of diesel with no bubbles.

Hi, I changed the airfilter today and boy what a difference already! It did 70mph on the flat!!! It's never done that before. It still had an original MB filter in it so God knows how long ago that was renewed, also cleaned out that rubber thing on the side of the filter housing which was completely clogged up.
Tomorrow I am going to tackle the fuelfilters, I had a look at it and there is some air in the top of the secondary filter. However have not been able to locate the handpump for bleeding the system, found a lever marked; STOP, so I know where that is now.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Please keep it simple for me as I am not technical at all, I am just a simple country vet! (at least the G doesn't try to kick me as I am working on it, a horse kicked me in the face today and gave me a bit of a headache)
When I have changed the fuelfilters I'll have a go at changing the oil and filter, do I need any special tools for that?

Thanks again,

Richard

The oil sump requires a 13 mm (I think) allen key in some models.

For the handpump see graphic below.

Again, for acquiring the G manuals, join the GWOA and contact the technical officer.

Hello

Thanks for your mail.

The only K&N element listed for a 1991 MERCEDES BENZ 300TD 3.0L L6 DSL is a
E-9165, the cost with VAT and postage would be £65.53.

If interested a secure order form can be found on our web site:

It doesn't look to me that they have the faintest idea of what they're talking about. i.e. I could end up buying the part for the turbodiesel engine which is useless for mine.

In a diesel, lack of power is always related to lack of fuel. it could be that some one has turned the fuel flow down to get through the emision test on MOT. an air filter doesent restrict flow that much. also worn injector tips will loose you power/increase smoking.
For my money, go to a decent diesel engineer get your injectors and pump serviced and recaliberated he will ipso change your filters.
Tip. when changing your fuel filter refill the filter case with injector cleaner before you refit it, this will help it to bleed quicker and clean your system when it starts.
Or you can do what I have just done. fit a 350 multivalve. turbo it and fit an intercooler. motor way cruise to date 105mph on flat. down hill with th wind behind 112mph massive torque I towed my 280 off roader on a trailer, all up weight 3800 kg to Belgium at the weekend. it came up the hill at Dover in 3rd at 45 mph cruised easily at 60 mph and reached 80mph on the hill down to Liege. I will email you some pics if you are interested
