Did Mercedes get it wrong?

I am now onto my third G Wagen and have to say that I never tire of the elevated driving position. Like probably all of you I love everything about the over-engineered feel, the slamming of the doors to make sure that they are fully sure and the sheer weight and solid feel to everything you touch.

The question I am asking is...................................

DID MERCEDES PLACE THE 463 INSTRUMENT CLUSTER IN THE WRONG PLACE?

I am no giant but at 6ft 1 and 18 stone which ever way I adjust my seat I simply cannot see all of the dials unless I crook my neck!

The top of the steering wheel always obscures the fuel gauge, the 3-5 revs and any speed from 45 - 85 mph.

Was this a problem on my old 460?...I don't recall.

This is probably not and issue for G Wagen owners under 5ft 7 or over 6ft 5 but I just wonders if anyone else had noticed this :-)

Thanks

Tim

I think you have a special order version for Spider1V - he asked for it to be that way so he had a ready made excuse to offer the police when stopped. "Honestly officer - I had no idea I was doing 84mph!"wink

Re: Did Mercedes get it wrong?

I think 460's have bigger steering wheels. Only 460's and early 461's have a cluster unique to the G. The rest are taken from straight from the car range.

Re: Did Mercedes get it wrong?

Gents,

This was not a 'Let's have a go at Spider1V post' but a serious sensible question and as near as you will get to a technical question from myself wink

You boys are so yesterday....our 8 legged 'Stirling Moss' has moved onto Mazda's!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8eA1cRqWPg

It then reminded me of the old men behaving badly sketch which always made me laugh.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBjy4qqu1tU

Please can someone take the time to give some thought to my technical question....or will I have to wait for Joe to post a sensible reply?

I know what it is - you just want additional cluster of dials to make your console look like a Rally cars dash....smiley

OR, OR, you want one of those 'Batman' steering wheel with the top arch of the steering wheel chopped off......wink

Rakesh,

Where is this club going..... when I cannot even get a serious answer from our technical guru?

Perhaps it is that my 'Soft Furnishings' question has just thrown all your technical boffs? cool

I like the idea of the Batman steering wheel but must confess I have already seen the prototype one being used with a paddle shift by the 'IVF' (In Vehicle Fertilization) Team down in Ciderland...............

For some conversions it may take the mantle of ..'Up the creek with a plastic paddle' cheeky

Ooops! - I now feel terrible that I might have upset Spider1V's delicate sensibilities.

Apologies to anyone else who thinks that I overstepped the mark.

Re: Did Mercedes get it wrong?

Hmmmmm..... OK see where this is going..... so in a refined, mature, non technical way I will explain a few points to those members who are 'thirsting' for more knowledge on their G463's.

First - I drive a G500 V8 (that means it is a 5ltr, V8 (referring to the number of cylinders and their position) that develops around the 300 BHP mark.
Second - (and this is relevant) it is a 463 Variant.
Third - An this is the most important fact, when a) owning a 463 and b) when its a G500............ one should concentrate looking out of the huge HD windscreen and focus on ones driving skills esp; admiring the ride height, the V8 'burble' and the look on everyone else's face, especially those in Range Rovers, as the blokes look on in envy wishing they too had a proper 'Man's vehicle' and the women just swoon with the manliness of the G wagen and can only guess at the prowess of the driver. Please see link below;

I do have an inward chuckle abut the 300 463's and the question posed from the honorable member for Norfolk when driving a 300, why do you think you need to look at the speedo? I was led to believe that they are so slow, I think the police would only pull you over to congratulate you on achieving 85MPH and give you a sticker of some sort?

This from a V8 Driver who was pulled at 128mph and got a fix pen and three points.

Seriously in a 300 you are worried about speed? You can see the 30 MPH for 'Urban' driving.. would have thought everything else was a bonus?

I thought it was going to pull the tractor! LOL Why, as he was on sand, did he not deflate the tyres to get traction, and then get out?

D'oh! blush

Re: Did Mercedes get it wrong?

This is the last time I attempt to ask a semi technical question on a G.

All I asked was do any other drivers over 5ft 10 have a problem seeing their instruments

Ctrl Alt Del.......

Re: Did Mercedes get it wrong?

so what you are saying is that all you can manage is a semi??

that allegro wheel was a perfectly reasonable solution , there is just no pleasing mr. new wood and leather  lwb swanky motor owner .

Re: Did Mercedes get it wrong?

Axel,

TFFT....I have just been on-line and bought two of them in case one breaks. I think you are the only one who got the problem I was raising.

However, looking at old you tube clips of men behaving badly made me realist what a classic show it was....Mazda = w@#€$3r

Re: Did Mercedes get it wrong?

yes i do know the problem , the wheel you have is 390 mm diameter (sportline size i think??) it does make seeing portions of the instrument cluster difficult , do you remember the leather 4 spoke early sieberfelter amg wheel i showed you that i had got for my super g / this will to a certain degree have the same problem but with a 460 type cluster the effect is not so bad as on a w124 type binnacle.

Re: Did Mercedes get it wrong?

So the technical answer is that all 460/461 and 463 had a bad design on the placement of instrument clusters?

Can I now join the techno club?smiley

Re: Did Mercedes get it wrong?
they got it wrong. temp gauge not clearly visable. dont worry bout speedo as they got the ability to achieve speed wrong. seats are cap too overall crap......... squash em all an make somethin else out of em. except the axels...save em for landrover....and the wheels for obvious reasons :)
