Cost of Gwagen in 1993
Does anyone know what the cost of a G wagon would have been in 1993 ?
Thanks
Richard
About 21,000 for a new SWB 300GD auto in 1992
Arnie, I think you are a bit out. A 463 lwb with a few options was closer to £40k
In 1997, bought a 1996, ex- MB UK demonstrator, for £21k. A G300E auto, SWB. It wouldn't have been half price after 1 year.
At that time, Caversham were selling 1991, used models for around £11k - £14k. Later around 1998 / 1999, Caversham would import a G500 for around £50k - If I recall correctly.
As for the 1992, new 300GD, auto, I will need to check the receipt.
Never had a LWB, so can't comment on those.
But here's an ad for a LWB claiming original receipt of £47k for 1996.
dont know about 1993 but my 1989 300GDL cost me 21.500

The website 463.de which is quite thorough in terms of the G’s history shows the following prices in Germany for the time period around 1993, I have applied an exchange rate of £ 0.8/ Euro: the cheapest G model was a 230GE Convertible for ca. £24k whilst the most expensive model was a 350 TD LWB for £38k. In a league if its own was the 500GE for £72k.
Adrian,
I like it ! (one day i'll get me some of them wheels !)

Interesting on the values, mines a 463 swb petrol auto, so some where in between around £30K to £35K ?
Any idea if petrols where more expensive than diesels ?
Yes patrols about 1k more, think automatic another 2k,
I found this old preisliste from 92.
excellent find, answers all questions.
My UK spec 1994 300GEL was purchased when new by my father in law for the sum of £40,950.
He actually purchased two at the same time, the other one was a slightly better spec with air conditioning and the rear jump seats which cost £42,400.
As well as the two G Wagons, in 1994 he also bought a new V12 SL600 for his wife which cost £104,000 and received absolutely no discount from Mercedes on any of them !
I did a slightly better deal when I bought these two from him in 1999

WOW!!!!
Never been a salesman but by chance whilst working late one Saturday in parts i managed to sell a car... the only one i ever sold whilst in the network on PC between 1987 and 2002, it was a V12 R129 600SL. The dear old 92 yo that i sold it to paid the same £104k for it in 94 too.... No discount was given for sure....tbh some models back then i understand some people quite often paid over list price to obtain them! Never did get any commission, but managed to deliver it to her ;) She passed away within a few months of delivery....perhaps the shock of "burying" her right foot?
Hmmmmmmmmmmm
I bought a new W140 S Class in 1997 and got £10K off. Just been quoted 17.5% off a new E Class built to spec.
Been offered a 2015 Shogun new at 20%, very tempting.
But then, I try very hard !
Dave
The tide had turned by 1997, in a big way....the W202 C Class in 93 had started the rot..... the start of the mass marketing and an MB for everyone... This followed on with the 95 W210 E Class and the subsequent quality issues... the W140 S Class in 91 never really hit the mark, a fantastic car, not a milestone like the W126 S Class was and not in keeping with the times and the competition, by 97 it was on is way out to be replaced by the sleeker and more trendy new model. With the 168 A Class and 163 ML in 97 the battle was on to keep both quality and sales volumes up...this all combined to make the customers position very strong and the brands very weak. A bad reputation for poor quality and service combined with desire for bigger sales volumes can only lead one way.....price cuts! It probably took MB nearly 10 years to recover and start hitting the mass market numbers it intended to drive in the mid nineties and make some profit!
Hi Gav
My understanding was Mercedes engineers used to design a car and then it would be given a price. After the mid 1990's the engineers were given a price and had to design a car to meet it, hence the reduction in both build quality and materials.
It is interesting to note that your little old lady also bought her SL600 for £104k in 1994. I think a reasonable '94 SL600 today is around £15k, I wonder what other cars £100k would have bought in the early 1990's that may have proved a better investment 20 years later ?
Yes Gav, all too true. And then there was the personal import saga, that eventually lead to better specifications, lower prices and discounts.
I liked the W140, it was the last proper S Class. I did 120K in it from new, then sold it to a friend who still has it with 250K on the clock.

Exactly Doug...
Quality = Low volume
Volume = Low Quality
Most people would put the Brand Values on the top line...
Investments don't bother me right now...i'm more in the value for money side of the argument, thats a lot of car for £15k!!!
Virtually anything from Italy i would guess and maybe a few from Zuffenhausen or as a long shot a Viper?
a G was always the same value as a good spec s class of the same era....
20k seems to low for 92. 30k would be the norm plus options...
mine was £64,500
but it was fitted with leather, electric and heated seats and spots.
