Hello, I've got a 300GD 460 which has a leaking gasket on the clutch bell housing resulting in oil entering and contaminating the clutch which has started slipping in 3rd and 4th gear, I need to replace the gasket but at the same time I think it prudent to change the clutch as cleaning the oil may not solve the issue.

Can anyone recommend a reliable place to purchase the correct clutch as there seems to be so many options and brands which range massively in price, I'd rather not have to get a genuine MB part though as they are always expensive, I've searched eBay and auto website but all seem vague. Any idea where to get the correct gasket too would be helpful! Attached a photo, if anyone is interested....

Thanks

Re: Clutch

Hi

Im sure there is no gasket on the bell housing of gearbox. They are just sealed with rta or silicone to stop water ingress

I am sure you will find it is the rear crankshaft oil seal leaking, or possibly the gearbox input shaft seal allowing fluid to conaminate clutch. Unless your clutch slave cylinder is leaking fluid into the bell housing

Let us know when you strip it down and the leak should be obvious

Re: Clutch

Is there any oil coming out of bell housing? Should be a bolt in there, is a paper gasket I think between gearbox , paper but looks like someone put silicone around yours. Rear crank seal?? Think you have to be careful you get the right parts for clutch as a few options out there.

Re: Clutch

Hi both,

Thanks for your swift replies, the oil trickles out of the hole which I thought was a breather hole but it is actually threaded and looks like it should have a plug inserted, the oil is definitely engine oil though, the clutch cylinder is good. The oil only leaks once the engine is warm but has been switched off for 5 minutes.

The rear crankcase seal is a round rubber seal is it not? I'll add some more pictures when I get the chance to strip it down. Thanks for your advise.

Cheers,

Re: Clutch

On some of the older models there is a paper gasket in between the bell housing and engine but experience has shown that M/B parts technicians cannot easily find this. This may have been discontinued; I do not know but substitute the gasket with high temperature silicone instead.

DO NOT use the sump sealing compound you find in modern vehicle this sets hard and if the gearbox is in need of removal it will be stuck on fast!

I would compare M/B prices on parts, they are not always expensive. In fact some OE parts tend to be more expensive than M/B so do your home work and compare. Replace the clutch as a complete kit, i.e. Centre plate, Pressure plate and Clutch release bearing. Asking prices from M/B, they used to itemise parts singularly and did not do kits; this practice may have changed.

Re: Clutch

Thanks for the heads up, my local M/B dealership still itemise all the parts so it tends to take a while, I enquired about wheel bearings once and it took over an hour to list all the parts!

Cheers.
