I always thought that certificates of conformity were only needed when you were personally importing a car which had not been oficially imported into the country.

I know that David Watkins needed one to import his G300DT (LHD) into the UK because this car has never been oficially imported into the UK.

But I wonder why do you need the certificate for importing into France a W460 300 GD LWB such as yours when thousands of those have been imported by MB France. Has it to do with the car being RHD. If that is the case you might need to obtain the certificate from MB France, where they certify that your G conforms with the type as imported by them.

Funny, because when I imported my 1984 300 SWB LHD into the UK from Spain (in January 1999) I did not require a single paper other than the V5 equivalent, to prove ownership of the car. But I had owned the car already for a few years.... perhaps that's what made the difference?

My father had to get one of these when he transfered his 1986 300GD to Italy.
They are obtainable from Milton Keynes and there is a special C-of-C department. You need to write a letter with your VIN number and registration details and the certificate will be issued within a few days. The certificated only states that the vehicle conforms to UK (European) standards at the time it was built. In italy this is only required as part of a very beaurocratic system to deter registration of imports. However, what was also required was a certified vehicle data card which contains the chassis number (yes, there is one stamped on the chassis), engine number, number of seats, etc... and this had to come from Germany.

Apparently the V50 registration certificate is not accepted, since there are so many forgeries around.

Funny? MB Milton Keynes gave me one last year for a 1986 300GD and it was free.

The C-of-C is vehicle specific, but it's a standard 1-page form to which they just add your VIN number and date of manufacture. It also has a coloured MB stamp so that it's not easy to photocopy. In fact, I think it just mentioned that the vehicle conformed to UK requirements, no mention of EC.

It was required but was not totally adequate for the Italian registration, since they wanted to confirm all kinds of other data and serial numbers (such as the chassis number). A certified data card had to be obtained from Germany also.

Items checked included:
VIN number
Chassis number
Engine number
Original Colour
Number of seats
Tow-hook specification (whether original fitment and whether CE approved version)
Wheel and tyre specification.
Then "MOT" type test on usual items.

I called MB and was advised that MD did not officially import Gs into the UK and thus they are unable to provide homologation information (how many people even knew that homologation is a word). Does anyone know how to get this?
