Hi my name is Chris from Australia. I own a 1984 300gd that was purchased in england and imported to Australia by a previous owner. And I am hoping someone can answer my questions below.

Q1.I took my 84 300GD to the mechanic because the syncro between 3rd and 2nd doesn't work. He told me they never came out with 5 speed and the box in it must have been adapted from another MB to fit. can anyone confirm if 717.42200000735 is the correct and original gearbox number for a 300GD. Or is it from another car.

Q2. If the syncro is worn can someone tell me how much they would cost to replace. And where would be the cheapest place to buy it from.

Q3. will the syncros from a four speed fit in my five speed box, as four speed boxes are readily available in Australia.

Chris

I had a 1984 300 GD fitted from factory with a 5-speed gearbox. This box was optional for the 300GD from 1984 and became standard equipment in 1987. If you send me your VIN I can e-mail you the datasheet for you car, with all the series numbers for engine, gearbox, axles, etc fitted when it left the factory.
