Can not keep my 280GE going
Morning fellow members - any advice would be welcome please.
For the past several weeks I've been having problems with my 280ge as every so often it cuts out when running or even idling (not all the time but often enough so totally ubsure when it will cut out) and more often than not it will not restart- highly annoying getting stuck in traffic!
I've called the RAC out twice and on their advice I've changed the ignition coil - I should have saved my money as even with the new one same problem.
The second time, on their advice I then changed the spark plugs/leads and rotor arm- and I cleaned the flow divider distributor, started fine and I was able to drive it for a few days. It cut out a couple of times but I was able to restart it but yesterday it did it again; started, drive it a few hundred meters then it cut out and no way I have been able to restart it.
as sn aside, battery's fine.
As there is no point in calling the RAC out again so I thought I'd ask if any of you guys have had a similar problem abd if so any idea/solutions would be welcome.
Thanks
Henryc
I had similar on my 230GE a couple of years ago and it was mostly needing a new Fuel Pump and Pump Relay, and also a new Fuel Accumulator (next to the Fuel Pump). Both under the vehicle on the near side rear axle area.
Both readily available and not massive money.
When you turn on ignition, the electric fuel pump should run (mine was wired to bypass a broken pump relay, hence that was corrected!).
The Fuel Accumulator holds fuel pressure in the pipes when stopped/stalled and makes hot starting work.
Maybe before that, you need to check that the Jetronic vacuum pipes are all OK. In particular the rubber gaiter under the Air Box sat on the fuel distributor (carb), and the little rubber breather pipe there too.
Because it sounds to me like air is intermittently getting in (or escaping) from this vacuum system.
Similar happened to me a couple of years ago. Solution was a new fuel pump relay. Cheap, easy replacement and no problems since.
No.
Relay bought on ebay - I think it was only about £20 so a great cheap fix. That was a couple of years ago so I'm sure they'll be a bit more expensive now. But no need for a garage - unplug the old one and plug in the new. 5 minutes - no labour charge.
I'm sure someone will be along shortly with the correct part number for your model. I just Googled the part number and found it that way.
It might be a blocked fuel filter.
If your filter has not been changed for some time it can start to break down inside and debris suspended in the fuel can temporarily block the mesh around the filter outlet shutting off the fuel supply to the engine.
When the engine stops the pump cuts off and the pressure inside the filter is released which eventually allows the debris to sink away from the mesh. After a while when you turn the ignition back on the pump runs briefly to re-pressure the system through the now clear filter outlet and the engine fires up as normal.
Depending on how much debris you have inside your filter the engine could run for some time before the filter outlet becomes blocked again, it is quite a difficult fault to diagnose.
It might be worth fitting a new fuel filter to see if that helps.
I'd be looking at changing the fuel filter and getting the warm up regulator serviced, the warm up Reg has a very fine gauze and if that is blocked it will drop fuel pressure, it's absolutely crucial that the unit is clean and clear
Hi Henryc..
my 280ge had same problem of cutting out and not restarting .. changed coil and plugs etc but turned out to be the ecu unit on the near side front wing (problem was intermintant )..also had a hot starting issue which seemed to be sorted by changing the fuel filter and fuel pressure accumalter unit ( both side by side infront of fuel tank )
hope this helps ...regards geoff
I had a very similar issue on my 300GE. Intermittently cutting out, restarting again after a while but cutting out again after a few minutes of driving or, at times, much longer. Replacing wear parts in the distributor did not help, eventually replaced the fuel pump relay, which solved the problem (separately, I have also replaced the two , yes, two fuel pumps on the car, but this was because they were making a loud noise, which I believe is an indication of a worn bearing).
The fuel pump relay is a common problem too
I have also replaced the two , yes, two fuel pumps on the car...
Ah yes. 2 pumps on the 6 cyclinder. Suggests to me that they are not the issue, because at least one would be working sufficiently well for pressure. Not sure if there is still one accumulator, to hold the pressure for better warm starting.
Hi reading all the posts my money would be on your fuel accumulator. If you hear your pump priming it's not the relay.
I would go with the accumulator it will cause your g to cut out and be a real pain to start.
Curious to know if you're getting anywahere - or if any of the suggetions have proven not to work.
Hi Mark - just waiting for the furl pump relay and for good measure I'll also replace the fuel pump and filter.
I'll keep you posted -Hc
I don't suppose you can try 1 item at a time, so we/you know what it was (if it is one of those items)
Have you still not changed the Accumulator?

Hi there and thanks - very encouraging especially if it resolved the the problems you had on your 230
I'll certainly follow the steps you've suggeste and fingers crossed.
Enjoy the rest of weekend
