Guys & Gals - a broken arm rest.  Some muppet loading too vigorously but it had be used as a foot stand before.  Has anyone experienced the joy of removing the rest, taking it apart and rebuilding it?

Re: Broken arm rest

Hi alan I had the same problem the foam moulding or fitment can easily snap it's made of soft and hard honeycomb foam. The metal work or skeleton inside is very strong so these parts are unlikely to be damaged. Order a new foam moulding and remove old springs and circlips.. You will need circlip pliers. The cover should peal off and then be re fitted like a sock. It is fiddly and will require some patience. Best regards dave

Re: Broken arm rest

In order to remove the arm rest from the seat pillar; you need to unclip the seat cushion (top half), uncover half way up the seat frame work and the nut securing the arm rest bracket should be visible to undo and remove.

Although the metal parts are strong the plastics for the bushing and tilt locking are relatively weak. If the arm rest droops beyond the horizontal level it is surely the plastic parts need replacement.

I think these components don't come cheap.

Alternatively replace the G-Wagen arm rests for another vehicle type; ie. VW transporter if you are inclined to do so.

Hi Alan if you use the search facility and type in " Arm Rest" you will see some pictures from when I installed them in my vehicle, these may help. Interestingly there are also comment about the weight they can support!

Thank you gentlemen.  I would guess that the fixings are "easy" to get at once the seat back is taken off - rather than taking the cushion away - or does the cushion come away also when the seat back is off.  I will post the photos of the "project".  Now - fabricating rests from scratch Kevin, that was something else and what a great finished job!

You can repair the arm rest without taking the seat apart.. It's unlikely to be the connection rod as this is very strong.. Remove the arm rest cover and circlips and the rest will come off..

Dave - I will give that a go; I don't fancy taking the seat apart.
