brake discs for W463
On my Swb W463 diesel at the moment I have solid front disc brakes they are due to
replaced. What type would you recommend i.e vented or solid. Can you use vented discs?
as most replacements on ebay or at motor factors are solid discs, and I would prefer vented
You are limited by the width of the brake caliper. The vented discs are much wider. You could probably find a disc which was drilled if that suited your needs. The vented disc on the later 463 is slightly larger in diameter and requires 16" wheels, whereas the early 463 uses 15"
Roly is right, you'll have to keep it as it is, unless you also want to change the calipers.
ECP have Textar discs and pads (OEM) for a reasonable price.
You should probably also obtain from an MB dealer the set of two fastening bolts per caliper, as the originals should not be re-used and also the disc retaining screws.
Depending on the service history, you may also wish to look at replacing the pistons and seals in each caliper ( about £60 from Brakes International).
Think despite your 16 inch wheels, you still limited to solid discs, unfortunately
If you go to MB for Discs and Pads make sure you get a deal....good discounts can be had if you push
460 and early 463 are the same set up...
Pads list on EPC for 460 / 463 as A005 420 98 20 which list as £132 + vat
T1 Van Pads are identical but a different number (still listed on the 460 EPC) A001 420 14 20 and list as £70 + vat
Discs depend on chassis / axle number
A460 421 00 12 up to axle R163868 @ £107.66 each + vat
A460 421 01 12 from axle R163869 @ £129.77 each + vat
Both are Solid and the only difference is the size of screw that locates it to the Hub. M8 early and M12 late.
The later 463 do have vented A463 421 00 12 up to R163399 and A463 421 03 12 from R163400 but they wont fit your Calipers without after market spacers if available and then may still not fit in the standard wheels anyway. Up to and from are the same M8 and M12 screws.
The standard MB non vented discs are perfectly OK if in good order as are the Rear Drum / Shoe set up if all working well
Like said above, after market drilled discs are available but in my opinion not necessary.

Are your rear shoes actually worn out? They see very little wear. You could try a clean and adjust and see how it goes
Sound like you need to do a major overhaul of the brakes front and rear:
- Front discs: Euro Car Parts: Textar, Brembo or Pagid
- front pads: ditto above
- Front caliper pad springs and pins: MB Parts Dept or with kit below.
- Front caliper overhaul: piston and seal kits from Brakes International
- Caliper bolts: two upper and two lower: MB Parts Dept.
- Brake disc screws: MB Parts Dept.
- Rear slave cylinders: Euro Car Parts or MB Parts Dept.
- Rear shoes: MB Parts Dept or exiting ones cleaned and/ or re-lined
- Rear drums: MB Parts Dept.
- Rear shoes spring kit: MB Parts Dept
- rear automatic adjusters: clean / service
- Brake hoses: Goodridge: Stainless Steel braided/ fittings
Drums should be painted externally and discs around the hubs to keep them looking good and rust free. Often, MB-sourced discs will be painted in grey primer, and show balancing marks. Cheap aftermarket discs are not pre-painted and often not balanced. But Textar and Brembo are OEM and Pagid are good quality and come pre-painted in grey.
Thanks for the advise Arnie.
I called Euro car parts and was quoted £35 +vat per disc for Pagid. Merc price was £75.83 +vat. I finally ordered Textar at £30 + vat from Local Factor agents.
Textar is good. They are a major brake disc and pad OEM for Mercedes and BMW and others. I read somewhere that their aftermarket pads are a slightly different formula to the ones they manufacture for MB and they produce less brake dust.
(You might need/want to paint the discs with a coat of grey primer from a spray can. Make a circular cardboard cut-out to mask the working surface, but any over-spray will get 'wiped' on braking anyway. Degrease with white-sprit or similar before painting.)
Sorry did not give you the year of my g wagon its a 1992. The wheel size is 16 inch at the moment.
Thanks for the replies will take on board the advice given
