Brake discs - alternatives to MB
With apologies to Gav @ MB ...
Does anyone recommend an alternative to MB's AMG discs? At £474.30 + VAT EACH DISC they are eye wateringly expensive.
I know, I know ... drive an AMG love it and pay to get the parts from MB. It is an expensive club. But MB do not make the discs.
What are they for, I have to say the price surprises me. I have an SL60AMG and the discs cost nothing like that.

2004 CLK55 WDB209.476 - but it could be worse; the full MB price is £527 each. 15% discount on 10+ year old cars!
Given that I do not race her, only do 3000 miles a year and I am not heavy on brakes - full AMG pricing seems to me to be outrageous. Even Brembo are about a third of the cost.
Just checked my records, my CLK55 (208) had front discs and pads replaced in 2009. The parts and labour (Indy) bill came to £462.82
So either I was lucky, or they priced the parts wrong, or prices have rocketed.
At the time I couldn't find anything other than MB parts, but quite honestly, if Brembo are doing them cheaper I would go with them. Nothing wrong with Brembo, as good or better than MB branded parts and probably in fact made by Brembo ;)
Sherlock will know who makes 'em.
ETA: Just checked Eurocar parts, they are doing Pagids at under £50 a side.

Yep Pagids, seen them, but are they any good? Anyone know what the minimum thickness of the discs should be? MB in Salisbury simply say (it is marked on the discs). Sorry guys not a G issue - but there is a universality to the general issue of overpricing.
Pagids are fine, but I'd say Brembo are better. Thickness wise, they should be replaced at 30.40. At new they are 32.50.
hth.
I don't know what prices you've got for Brembo, but I do know that Opie Oils are doing them for about £97 each.

PM me your chassis number Alan
Will price tomorrow...

Hi Alan
Let me do some digging on this, i think MB have a price issue (decimal point!)
Those discs A171 421 01 12 list from 2004-2008 (£527+VAT EACH)
The 2008 onwards ones are A203 421 09 12 (54.30+ VAT EACH)
Not be the first time...
Gav - did you get anywhere with the MB pricing "issue"? Alan
Very sad to hear about Tony; I never met him but spoke a number of times. Good man.
Hi Alan
Sorry, i thought i had emailed you directly, i spoke with MB pricing, with no joy, i even took it up with 2 of MB's field guys i had on site, with no joy!!!
£527 + vat per disc still stands!!
What i do find amazing is that they have sold 50+ in the last year!!!
Trying to find an alternative is drawing a blank....
Those discs A171 421 01 12 fit chassis 209.476 from serial T023346
Yours is T034716 so ok
The early discs A203 421 09 12 fit chassis 209.476 up to serial T033979 so not ok
That don't quite make sense as the is a big overlap where serials from T023346 to T033979 could have either?
However yours is clearly the later type
The Pads, Calipers and Back Plates differ to the same break points as the discs so i don't think the discs will inter change?
The same applies to the rear set up...
Remarkably for the apparent usage, no UK dealer stocks them?!?
Interestingly the pads at £138 + vat for the later type to £55 for the early type, obviously yours is running something special!
You could replace Both Calipers, Discs, Back Plates and Pads to the early type for not much more than one later disc!!! wtf
Searching the net on that part number brings back many after market alternatives in the states, but prices are the same as MB...
Best i can offer is somewhere around retail -30% maybe stretch a little more if i can place it with a bigger order with the dealer.
PM me if you need to go this route...
Gav
Alan,
I have looked into this for you. I get a decent discount at MB so have pm'd you with my prices.
No one does them after market.
These have the min thickness stamped on the discs.. many will simply have them skimmed as long as min thickness isnt breached.
Note that many of the supercar dealers keep skimming machines on site due to cost of new discs.
G wagens are just in a class of their own...
Only other similar thing out there is the Land Cruisers... have you seen how much they go for?!
