Bonnet Star - How can you get it to fit?
Hi,
I'm sure I am not alone in preferring the original "Gun sight" Mercedes Bonnet Star.
Trouble is, having bought 2 different models, I have been unable to fit them. The radiator cap sits pretty snug to the underside of the bonnet, not allowing any room for the spring mechanism.
I'm also sure someone will have found a devious method to overcome this prob, if you would be so kind as to impart?
Thanks
Martin,
Realise that if you do this, you'll have to regularly replace it - enough idiots out there who break them them off leaving you with a broken star and dented bonnet.
Other than that, get handy with a hacksaw, drill and tap and bolt it from below with suitable penny washers...
Just thinking - a coil, capacitor and some decent rubber(tap?) washers should provide enough motivation to a would-be vandal to NOT try his luck in future... think holding a plug lead with one hand and touch the engine with the other while the engine(petrol) is running :D

I think that people have overcome the problem by fitting the star not just where the MB bonnet badge sits at the moment but closer to the windscreen of the car. This was, the radiator cap does not interfere with the star's mechanism.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Haven't lost a bonnet Star in 15 yrs of Merc ownership, I'm glad to say!!
Still like the thought of your electrifeid version though.
Problem with a hacksaw is you are suggesting removing the Spring Tensioning components. Not sure if the thing will stay in 1 peice after that!
Anyone any other suggestions?
Thanks
