Bonnet gas struts
I'm after some info here please.....
could anyone who's got the gas struts on their bonnet possibly take some measurements and if poss, a couple of pictures?
I have access to a few struts at work from some old machines we scrap, so want to fit a couple to my 460.
What I'm after is;
The length of the original strut (overall length and the black cylinder piece)
The measurement of where the lower fixing point, and the top fixing point is... can be from any common datum point... say from the bulkhead for the bottom and from the windscreen end of the bonnet, just so I can see where MB mount theirs.
And possibly a picture of either end, showing how they mount the end of the strut onto the bonnet & inner wing.
Many thanks all.
Its only one Gas Strut on the passenger side, fits on the inner wing using a ball/socket type thing secured by a nut, very easy to unclip will try to get measurement
I have a Danish (?) Army walk-on bonnet. It was already fitted with brackets on both sides for struts. I sourced struts from my local truck parts supplier. We cross-referenced a W463 strut for measurements. Fabricating bracket(s) would be required to retrofit to standard W460 bonnets. The struts are fitted directly to the wings using the existing bolts/nuts that tie the outer wing to the inner wing.
Hi Jim, here are some pictures of my 1992 463.
I'm sure it would be the same for all G's.
The bottom is fixed at the second bolt holding the fender, as in the picture.
The connection on the bonnet is measured from the rear edge of the bonnet, see photo
The other pictures show the differences between a genuine MB Gas Lift and an aftermarket Gabriel GasLift.
The GasLift I bought was about fifth of the price of the genuine part and works just the same.
I had it pumped to 280N as per original. The lengths are not quite the same but that does not matter as the Gas Lift works as good as the original. The Gas Lift can be extended still more with small extension pieces as per one photo.
Hope this helps.
Alan
the nice thing about the w460 is that you can fold the bonnet back onto the window, add in a piece of wood for a low tech option
