Other people seem to have the problem with bonnet opening mechanisms that theirs is jammed shut and they cannot open it.

Mine (W463 of year 2000) is the other problem. I can open the bonnet all right. We replaced the cable some time ago. But on closing it, the hinged catch moves freely and engages but the bonnet does not always fully press down (though sometimes it does). Which suggests to me either that the spring in the peg part of the locking mechanism (for what of a better word) has had it or that the socket into which the sprung peg sits is not always in line properly.

Does anyone else have experience of this problem, and if so how have you dealt with it please?

kind regards JPS

Re: Bonnet catch not closing

JPS,

You have touched on the solution briefly already.

The striker rod, as you mention could be out alignment and, or the height adjustment is wrong (too short) to lock in the catch when the bonnet is closed. Additionally, check and adjust the rubber buffers at either end of the bonnet; these generally adjust the bonnet height when closed and maintain an even alignment of a closed bonnet.

Very helpful suggestions, thank you very much, which we will investigate. Is it possible that the spring on the striker rod could be, to use a technical term, buggered? (Visual inspection looks nothing untoward).
