best multi purpose tyre for on/off road use?
best multi purpose tyre for on/off road use?
BF Goodrich - All terrain. They cost a bit more but last for yonks, have good road manners and very good off road.
second howard's reply. BFGs all the way - I have tried some of the other brands through the years, but always find myself going back to these. Only time they are bad is if you want to go to southern europe often as they are a very hard rubber (and the roads there are very smooth because they use more chalk in their tarmac): they tend to be a bit slippery then on the road....but are great for offroad in the summer and don't puncture anywhere near as much on the gravel tracks as other tyres do (including Coopers!)
What is the split you are looking at?
I desperately wanted the BFG's, but at the time Michilin (who onws them) had them on back order, in the end I went cooper zenon LTZ's. Here is the post when I first got them, did about 40K + miles on them and now onto my second set. Great in the snow and not bad off road as well, the wider land/sea flings the mud out quite well, armored sides and will not raise the G, so no problems with car parks 2m or under.

Just fitted Michelin Lattitude Cross. I think they are very good all-round. They are 60 / 40 road biased. They also have a lot of sipes, which makes them good on snow too.
Look at the new European ratings for wet braking, economy and noise:
Michelin Lat Cross: C, C, 71dB
BFG-AT: C, G, 77dB
Wrangler -AT: C, E, 73dB
I have Michelin Latitude Cross fitted on my VW Touareg Escape. Very good but I prefer BFG's on the G
You're not comparing like for like, Michelin make great tyres but the latitudes won't do what the BFG AT's will or put up with the abuse that the AT's can take.
I ran my last set at 8 to 16psi for many hundreds if not thousands of miles off road. Only one puncture as well in their entire life. They still lasted for around 45k miles. I've replaced them with the same, my only regret being I should have gone for the MT2's.
If you're not interested in any real off road use go for the Latitudes or equivalent though. There are compromises with any AT or MT tyre, sorry stating the obvious.

Yes, compromises, for sure. The original question, above mentioned on/off road. I don't doubt the BFG AT are better off-road, but I suspect that the Michelin will be better on-road.

No question about it, they will be significantly better. But then for a vehicle like the G Wagen you're never going to have great on road dynamics.
never got round to ever fitting bfg at's but they are the best...
cooper st max is also very good. i always looks for the bargain at the end of the day...

What size are we talking?
BFG very good except for when they get old despite plenty of tread not that much grip on road?
Just got Cooper AT3, fantastic in snow, very quiet on road, released a few bhp as well, probably not the best choice for serious off road but as a compromise seem good to me and cheap!

Yes, the tread pattern has lots of sipes, so should be good. Seems to be a trend with newer designs from most manufacturers, as old AT designs, even with M+S rating, were always rubbish on snow.
Also seems that if you run 16" wheels, you have a great amount of choice, including a lot of AT designs from various manufacturers - which incidentally seem to have comparatively low speed ratings. If you run 18" or bigger, the choice decreases. If you still have 15", the choice is very limited. (all assuming standard G tyre sizes)
On 225/75 16 only limited to 104mph, but don't think I would get near that, 80 mph maybe on a good day.
Also have the original 255/75 15 Alloys and tyre choice in that size very bad, I think only Kuhmo?
Sipes worked really well in snow on Cooper AT3 but tyres were brand new so that obviously a big help, up there with Latitude for me, but can't comment on how long they last? Much quieter than GoodYear ATS, revelation to MT !

And Wrangler ATS, and Cooper, if I recall correctly, but that's about it.
For the 16" Atiks, I got some 265 70 R16 Vredstein X--Streme winter tyres. These are H rated, 130 mph.
I've recently been testing the Goodyear Duratracs on three different cars, my FJ80, a 1985 300GD, and a 2004 G500.
We have done everything from rock crawls to desert to beach and now recently 2 feet of snow. I really like em.
They have nice siping in the tread for good braking in the wet, ice, snow, etc.
The tread blocks are a mix of mud terrain shapes and all terrain shapes
The rubber compound is softer than the BFG AT but harder than my BFG MT KM2s
I run them at 18psi offroad and they have been superb.
Do they offer these in UK?
I tried to get hold of these as a set of 'winter tyres', but had no luck. The UK market seems to be split into either offroad or not. Winter tyres are slowly making an appearance though, but seemingly only on performance cars (i.e. Porsche Cayennes in particular).
for winter tyres try mytyres.co.uk, order in October and availability and prices should be good.
For my wolf I use BF Goodrich all terrain with mud and snow rating. Very nice and versatile tyre. It can clog up a little in heavy mud though but that's to be expected.
255/75 x 15 = 30/9.5 x 15 (I Think) Should give a wider choice inc BFG a/t
