Being a UK resident and long-standing owner of LHD G-Wagens I have a very clear opinion against the kind of premium (or rather penalty) that drivers pay in this country for the pleasure of driving a RHD car. I would never pay such penalty. And it now looks that I am not alone! Or else see the comments made in an article in the May issue of Mercedes Enthusiast magazine:

Quote:

While it is not possible to register a left-hand-drive car in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia and Hong Kong, Japan takes the same view as the UK and allows it, inadvertenly creating another local distortion.

A Japanese friend told us some years ago that to some status-concious Japanese who would like the unwashed masses to recognize that they are wealthier, driving a left-hooker signifies 'imported car', 'more expensive' and therefore 'I am rich'. Evidently, some really status-concious drivers go to the lenght of applying suntan cream to their left arms, hinting that they drive a LHD and are therefore wealthy!

Another local indiosyncrasy not necessarily related to the above is that some purist Japanese buyers prefer their car with the steering wheel on the side of its country of origin. On that basis, lots of Japanese Mercedes-Benz owners have LHD cars while Jaguar buyers opt for RHD...

C'mon more that a 100 million Japanese car drivers can't be wrong!

Cheers

Well i agree............
I'VE JUST BOUGHT MYSELF A G-WAGEN AT LAST!!!!!!
I bought myself a LWB 1991 Brabus G36 and its bloody mint and i mean mint, done 110,000 km and got it at a very nice price, and LHD's are not that much of a problem to drive, drove it back it took me about 90mins to get home and am now finding it just as easy as a RHD car.

So now i'm a G owner.......

Congratulations Steve!

You have now got your GWagen. Now you need to ask yourself:
· DO YOU WANT
Access to technical manuals to help maintain your G-Wagen?
· DO YOU WANT
To be able to call on skilled and experienced people for advice about your G-Wagen?
· DO YOU WANT
To know where to be able to buy quality parts and accessories and discount prices?
· DO YOU WANT
The opportunity to meet and chat to other G-Wagen enthusiasts like yourself?
· DO YOU WANT
To take your G-Wagen off-road at specially organised events?
· DO YOU WANT
To receive a regular newsletter with chats, views, reports, advice and sales and wants pages?
· DO YOU GET
37.53 mpg from your G-Wagen?
If you have answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, particularly the last one, then join the GWOA

(to the last question, we'd like to know how....).

No need for the sales pitch i'm gonna join up!!!!
I would like to see if i can find out more about my car, a good friend of mine who use to be one of the head merc' grease monkeys (but left as they had become a terrible company to work for once the yanks got invloved...)came round to see my car at the weekend and claimed that he had never seen a Brabus conversion like this, and seeing that i have the paperwork from Brabus themselves it isn't some DIY job (too good for that).

As for your little joke about 37.53MPG , i think i'd be happy with the .53mpg part.........JUCIY!!!!!

LHD in a RHD world

Hi

As always I'm on the lookout for a lwb G. I found one but it is a LHD.
South Africa is a RHD country like the UK.
Any big cons driving a LHD? Is it beter to wait for a RHD to come along?

Thanks
Johann

Mine are both LHD. They're easy to drive. What's the big deal?

Yip but you are from the USA!
You are suppose to drive LHD's. For you it would be like driving a RHD in Los Angeles.

I've been debating this myself and my conclusion is that the only thing that will really cause problems are drive through ticket machines or I suppose drive through anything that doesn't involve a person who can lean from the other side.

I guess overtaking trucks could be a problem too, but for the most part you can see over everything.

Someone I know who drives a LHD around London and actually prefers it on the narrow streets as she says it allows her to drive that much closer to the cars on her left - as for the right, the oncoming drivers can fend for themselves!
