It depends on how baggy. Good news is that is most likely due to worn linkage bushes. Buy the set and replace and you'll probably notice a great difference.

presume this refers to a certain lack of precision in gear selection , am intrested as have just purchased 1989 5 speed ( diesel ) and its a case of " give it a stir" and hope for the best , gear themselves engage ok , anyway , apart from MB where do I source said bushs --- also require battery , big square one -- posts at opp corners --- local comm motor factor was very helpful ( after he had finished laughing - made his afternoon it did ) but said special order @ £200.00 , perhaps MB would be cheaper ! or since batt is for SWB for offroad am considering installing tractor/truck batt in pass footwell , well tied in with baler twine of course.

You can find battery here:

http://www.gwoa.co.uk/node/221

It still too expensive I am sure that you can adapt a more conventional battery. BTW, this type of battery was exclusive to RHD 300 GDs. LHDs had a more normal one instead.

Linkage bushes are like £0.50 each at MB dealers so that you don't need to break the piggy bank.

baggy sticks and batteries

Thank you for your prompt reply , can simply fit smaller batt within existing tray , or two in series , good news re bushs though , PS did I see somewhere that worn wiper spindles let in coupious amounts of water , got very wet driver side footwell , no signs of previous/long term damp though does this prob occur suddenly , previous owner insistent that I must have left window open when I queried.
PS. what is normal for temp needle or do they vary , mine seems to be running cool , any likley reason for theromstat to be tampered with or removed , before I start dismantleing things unecessarily. How I have matured! Senior managment says that should read " how have I matured?"

two in parrallel

probably just a typo error on your part, but if you are going to use two batteries, then make sure and have them in parrallel and not series as you say, presumably you are talking about two 12volt batteries

24 volt conversion ( unintentional )

Bob , thank you for drawing that apparent potential faux pas to my intention , but yes a typo , and me after explaining to motor factor that I could use two batteries and still get 12 volts, so thanks again
PS anyone with opinions re wet feet or normal engine operating temp?

The wiper spindles are easy to check for water ingress.... remove the wiper arm and the plastic cap and shake the spindle to see whether it would let water in.

If they are OK buy a new pair of plastic caps anyway and assemble soaking the nut that holds the spindle with petroleum jelly before fitting the new plastic cap. This will keep water at bay.

Otherwise you'll have to buy the spindle assembly which I believe is pricey.

Regarding water temp, how cold is your G runninG?

Cheers,

wiper spindles/eng temp

OK on the wiper/water thing,
re engine temp , on normal road driving needle always left of vertical and falls back quite quickly/significently on downhill.
thought thermostat should keep at fairly constant temp , appreciate viscous fan , I have been used to elect fans ( in diesels ) previously
Or how can I measure install guage, did I see in handbook 75 to 95 ( centigrade ) was normal --ok?

wet feet

If the air intake drainer is blocked beneath the bonnet usually with leaves you will get wet feet, you need to stand on the bumper and lean right into the engine bay to see.

leaves in air intake

Pardon the pun but I will look into that Guerdeval , I take it that is square box on centre line of veh , directly below windscreen ie at back of engine.
