I changed the transmission fluid about 12 months ago on my G. I did this by removing the pan, replacing the filter and gaskets. My question is does the torque converter and transmission share the same fluid? If not how do you change the torque converter fluid?

Thanks,
Russ

I've never hand an automatic G but I shall confirm your question by deduction. Yes, they should share the same fluid, based on two pieces of evidence: 1) The summary of "Service products and capacities" mentions the Automatic Transmission but not the torque converter and 2) The service manual, in section 27 (Automatic Transmission) lists the jobs of "2702 Oil and filter change", "2710 Checking and correcting level" and "2790 Converter housing - draining fluid", but no traces of "torque converter, oil change".

Either they share the fluid or the one of the torque converter is there for life, which I very much doubt given the G's engineers obsession for changing fluids and filters.

Jesus,

This is the bit that confused me "2790 Converter housing - draining fluid".

Thanks,

Yeah, I agree but it l would think that this relates to some fluid leaking into the converter housing that needs to be evacuated when doing programmed maintenance.

The torque converter is a fluid coupling which contains the same oil as the g/box and needs to be drained at the same time as the g/box. It is the same system. There is a plug on a part of the torque converter which, when positioned at the bottom , allows the fluid in the Torque converter to flow out. There is a plate on the bottom of the gearbox which allows access to the plug. By not draining the torque converter you are leaving approx 1 L of fluid in the system.

Cheers Roly,

Even though it's only been in a year or so I was thinking about changing it again on the basis that when I did change it it was contaminated. So I figured another change would flush it out completely.

MB recommend changing the oil @ 36000 M. I'll do mine @ 20-25000 I think.

On my 280 you take the drain plug out then you have to move the torque converter round by spinning engine on starter (some one else does this for you) whilst waiting for drain bung in conveter to appear. A pain but must be done, Change oil frequently and gearbox will last forever
