The G500 is running really well overall now that my intermittent starting issues have been sorted - it was the Crankshaft Position Sensor - and the 100,000 milestone will be reached in the next few weeks smiley

However, there is one issue which I'd like advice/experience from members - the auto gear lever will not move from D to 4 but otherwise works normally (ie lever goes fine between P, R, N & D but will not then move across into 4, 3, 2 & 1). Has anyone come across this before? Is it a selector issue or the sign of something more serious (and costly....)

Thanks.

Re: Auto gearbox selector problem

Hi

Sounds like the selector pin has snapped inside the selector.

This can be repaired with parts available from MB, however its a complicated repair and its also a job removing the selector from the G!

Hope this helps.

Thanks Raj - will check out your suggestion with my mechanic friend.

Are you saying it's difficult because of access/need to remove centre console etc?

The centre console has to be stripped to gain access to the selector for removal, then the selector has to strripped and rebuilt which can be time consuming bit can be done, I've done a few!

Hi mr mountain goat

Have you had a lot of trouble with this particular G500 - I recall a previous post where you had a snapped axle at one stage or was that someone else ?

If not I was thinking it must be hard driving conditions up your direction. Is the Diesel engine versions typically more reliable than than a petrol ?

MG7,

Its very frustrating when this happens and from memory it was around the 100K mark on mine, no real biggie to replace, though frustrating as the part concerned was pence, but the labor to change was pounds!
