Auto gearbox problem 290GD
My Auto gearbox suddenly wouldn't reverse I managed get pushed backwards out of the parking space and drove home with no problems but no reverse when the levers in "R" nothing, I've looked at the linkage it's working OK the transmission oil is clear and on the dip mark anyone got any ideas, I think the reverse pack has gone sounds "expensive"
Griff, I am not a auto specialist but I know a man who is.
He is asking what mileage have you or best can tell on the gearbox.
Seeing your modification; is this a donor gear box? How many speed is it, four or five? What is the donor off? Any gearbox number to offer?
I read that the g/box failed suddenly, was it as sudden or have been having any inclinations of problem developing? You record the oil is on the mark; I am assuming that this was checked as it should be on a hot and running engine in "P" mode on idle.
Re-iterating on one of your comments, the oil is clear and no debris or blackness about it and does not smell burnt.
If you like to add please do as these are the prognosis is based on what has been disclosed.

This is a factory original 461 with OM602 290 engine and 4 speed auto

The car has 154000 miles on the transmission as far as I know it's an original fitted four speed box I haven't looked at the serial number on the box yet, the problem happened yesterday I had been around town reversing with no problem then just near home I called at a shop pulled into a car parking space and it wouldn't reverse out. The only indication I noticed was I put a shunt in to get in the space and I noticed it never strained on the brake which was unusual but I pulled back and then forward straight into the parking space I haven't looked at the history that I have on the car to see when the oil was changed, I'm going to get a new filter and do a oil change, when I drop the box sump I will see if there is any debris as the oil feels a bit thin.
I had the car for a year with no problems the oil is right on the mark when hot & running,
It's in the garage now and I will get under it for some serial numbers to check the history of the box after the festivities that are on top of us. I should be posting more information in the next few days.
