After driving the  460 automatic for years I've had noticed a rattle noise from behind the dash and wondered where this was from, anyway drove down a rough bit of road and hooked my foot under the brake pedal and hay presto no noise.

The return spring is fitted I assume the larger brake pedal being a lump bigger than a manual pedal is the cause, my question is can this shaft be lubricated ? It can not be worn it has only done 80.000 miles.

while I'm here when selecting reverse gear in the same g there is a whine from somewhere can this be the gearbox or more likely the transfer box it made this noise for years and has not got any louder.

many thanks

Re: Auto box pedal noise

the noise is possibly caused by the small rubber bump stop that screws into the pedal box casting , it has fallen off or deteriorated allowing the brake pedal  to rattle on the free play of the return spring ,most of the 280 ge autos i have driven whine in reverse to some extent - nature of the beast i suppose.

Re: Auto box pedal noise

Having a freebie EPC access gives limited information. The automatic pedal box is not fully shown on this EPC but manual system is.

What is shown on a manual pedal box is the pedals have bearings and bushes in which case to answer your point yes it is possible to lubricate the bearings and if necessary replace worn bushes assuming the auto-pedal box arrangement is similar. It is extremely rare for these bushes or bearings to wear out or dry out at 80,000 miles.

The whine in reverse gear is probably from the gearbox rather than the transfer box. The noise indicative of internal wear in the gearbox of one of the sun or planetary gear or ring gear of some sort. I do not fully know as automatic gearbox is not my specialist field.

Re: Auto box pedal noise

i have serviced the bushes in the pedal box and you HAVE TO take the pedal box out of the vehicle to remove the taper pins to drive out the main pedal pin(s) and then polish the shafts and re-grease with  a long life product  or if you are really determined drill and tap for grease nipple /the pedal pivots can seize at high miles making the brakes drag /i have seen this on two 463's.

Re: Auto box pedal noise

Picture if it helps, for the Auto Brake Pedal, no bushes / bearings / pins are listed as spare parts, complete Pedal Assy only.

Two type, up to and from chassis number with GB vehicles getting the later pedal earlier than the ROW?

Happy rebuilding / greasing!

Re: Auto box pedal noise

Thanks for the advise guys I had a look for the rubber stop today but all I could see was the brake lite switch I wonder if there should be a rubber stop on that, as i could not see any other stop
