Hi All Just seen this and would appreciate any views, knowledge of it/the model etc http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C635859# Always feels a bit odd when you get - totally solid and starts and runs perfectly in the same ad as - just spent £5k at the last service (a bit tongue in cheek this as I of all people know how a G can consume cash :-)) Any thoughts appreciated though.. Yup, price is high, laugh mind you do you know what the mileage is? I would also say that the exhaust is NOT a factory fit. The side pipes were done on the AMG's, so the exhaust has been replaced/changed. The front Grill is also new. What else has been done? If the FMSH is logged and the changes are cosmetic, with the Aircon, nice SWB maybe the price could be OK???

Let is know how you get on

FSH yes but FMBSH? I wouldn't take my G anywhere near a main dealer. Specialist every time.

Not sure 5K would buy much in certain parts of parts of Berkshire: "..at G-Wagen Garage in Berkshire" Not in my experience anyway.

I would definitely get it very very thoroughly checked out. If the opinion about it's "rarity" and "condition" comes from where I think it does, I'd take a bag of salt with me.

But hey ho, who knows, it might just be a cracker.

Re: Any thoughts on this one?

Thank you to Joe and Ian for those well researched and enlightening replies smiley.

I have a few MB hydraulic jacks kicking around the garage somewhere which I would be happy to take only £500 each for devil.

Just very happy to know that the item sitting underneath my drivers seat is so valuable.

Do you think I should disclose this to my insurance company?

Re: Any thoughts on this one?

Here it is, a genuine two owner Mercedes Benz factory fitted hydraulic jack valued at £1000.

Yours for only £499.98.

I am also willing to include a genuine factory fitted tool roll for an extra £500. They are currently valued a double this price, it's true because it says so on the internet smiley.

But on a more serious note - has anyone actually used one of those jacks to lift their G Wagon on anything other than pristine and level tarmac?

I've always been far too nervous to try and have resorted to trundling my trolley jack out of the barn when any heavy lifting necessary.

Mark I have used mine on my 460 swb 1989, and it works perfectly fine, but that was on 'okay' tarmac, also had a long pole for extra leverage .

Re: Any thoughts on this one?
Hi All Many thanks for the replies.. And no Scouse I'm not looking to offload my 460 - despite the rust! The reason I asked was how difficult it seems to find a honest G these days. This one looks great, and the sellers makes all the right sounds, until he gets to the £5k service and £1k jack part - unless he has got a rallye/race type self jacking system :-)). Of course, it could still be a good one? As I often say this is one of the big differences between a G and a Defender. Get a G slightly wrong and you can get a long series of very big bills, whilst with a Defender you tend to suffer less financially, as they seem to built to go wrong often, but be easy & cheap to fix! And I'm saying that as a G man through and through! But I come back to my point at the start, buying a G these days is a minefield trying to sort the good from the bad. Finally though, any views on this particular model of 463? I seem to recollect discussions about the 'great' generation of 463 post rusting 460 and pre electric spaghetti + reliable engine? Was this model one of those? Simon

Re: Any thoughts on this one?

The point is that a G Wagen can take many years of neglect and poor maintenance, before problems begin to surface and things start to go wrong. It's then expensive to repair. It's a tough vehicle, but it does require regular maintenance to keep it in good shape, but you can buy one and run it for a number of years wit little or no maintenance before passing on to the next unsuspecting owner.

Re: Any thoughts on this one?
Hi Arnie Yep, spot on as usual. A different, though perhaps unintentional approach from Merc & and LR.. One is built like a truck and just keeps going (mine had several cylinder head cracks and was still moving when I first got it) whilst the LR fails earlier, but is cheap and easier? To fix. The guys who work on mine are LR guys and that's their take on them... Which all adds up to being able to pass a basket case on that looks like a good car. Best Simon

My first trip as a GWOA member, with the family, was up in Dent we had pull up by a lake and I had my baptism of fire changing a G Wagen wheel on the lake shore. I can safely say that so long as there is a sturdy platform, in this case was a large flat stone, I was shocked that this tiny, little thing could heft up the G! Since that day I have changed tyres on a G twice. BAck hates me and I will never be as quick as those formula one guys!
