snorkel

It is for those that wish to "Forde" their vehicles getting the alternator wet would sound a death nell for for it even if not straight away. the snorkel also allows it to breathe in cooler air coming in from the grill other than warm air from around the engine

Fording

I am no expert and i will bow to any expert but As far as I could tell on the one I had rebuilt the rear end which contains the commutator and brushes is sealed from the the front section which contains the windings and fins. If water flooded into the back it would short out and the bearing get wet and gritty
