Allroad tires for 16inch alloy rims
Hi guys, I'm a recent member preparing my 1999 G for some overland traveling. The current tires are 265/60R16 road versions. I'm considering switching them out for 265/65R16 allroads (eg BF Goodrich). That would improve offroad use and add about 2,5 cm of ground clearance (if I calculated correctly). I'm just not 100% sure they will fit the arches (in all conditions). Does anyone have experience withe this? And maybe suggestions on good allroad tires?
mine wears 31x10.5xR15 and has plenty of clearance, that equates to 255/80/R15 metric
The standard (463, wide) tyres from about 1995 onwards, should be 265/70 R16 not /60 and not /65, although I have seen the latter fitted, presumably because they may be cheaper or easier to find?
Previously (1990 - 1995) , 255/75 R15 were used, but later 463, adopted larger front calipers and moved to 16" wheels.
They probably, if you don't go wider than 265, as there is plenty of room in the wheel arch. But, depending where you are traveling to, find a size and brand that is easy to find and replace, if necessary.

We have gone from 16 inch to 15 inch to 18 inch
If you are going overseas save the 18 inch and the 15 inch and fit 16 inch rims
Why ????? Because land rovers and asian trucks fit 16 inch rims. That way you will always get a tyre with no hassle even in remote parts of the world
They will be the cheapest option too and make your trip more worry free
Go 16 inch and thank me on your return
Gaz
16" alloys are a relative rarity on a G though
Hi
Yes i suppose most are 15inch earlier ones. Was it only 463 g wagons that had 16 inch??
Annoyingly my alloy wheels 15". I would go for 16inch if you serious about going off the beaten track, 235/85 16
No, w460's with no bodykit had 16 inch steel wheels as standard and could option 16" alloys. I'd guess these were just 6 inches wide though, they looked daft on a car with the extended wheel arches

For the W463 with wide arches : -
No. 6 was the standard wide wheel type from 1990 - 1994-ish (15")
No7 was standard fit as the skinny wheel (16")
and
No. 8 were the standard wide wheel , 1995 - 1999-ish (16")
Ok, I got the rim size wrong. They are 18 ... will a 265/65R18 do it (or can I even go bigger)?
