Hi everyone, the aircon in my W463  1991 300gd has never worked. Can anyone suggest where to start looking please? Cheers Mud

Re: Aircon not working

Well, first have the system re-filled and leak-tested. this is about £50 -£70. Most garages and places like Halfords, Quick-fit have the equipment these days.

Don't waste money on the DIY refill 'aerosols' as the system needs to be vacuumed down first for about 30 mins before refilling. Any air in the system will drastically reduce performance.

Make sure the right quantity of lubricant is also injected, as part of the refill.

The refill connection is under the front grille (needs to be removed for access to the lines).

The system will not run unless the pressure- sensor sees the appropriate system pressure.

Start by checking the system pressure, if the pressure is low then you could consider the route proposed by "Arnie" be aware you may have an earlier type gas such as R12 in this vehicle so you may require a conversion to recharge the system.

There should be a green sticker showing what gas is in the system. As Kevin said, it may be the older and no-longer-available,  R12, but quite likely it will be R134a. The sticker will show how much gas, by weight, the system should be charged with. (If you have R12, seek the advice of an air-con specialist for what alternative may be available).
