Air filter for 300GD
I don't suppose anyone has any experience of fitting a K & N air filter to a 300GD? I hear that it can increase performance and mpg. Any ideas/recommendations?

It does ( increase performance and mpg) according to people who use it who also speak wonders about them. But I would only fit them it if I used the G solely on the road. I suspect that if the oil-bath type of filter offered only advantages and also satisfied the requirements of off-road driving Mercedes would have used it in the G instead of the paper type. Even my old Vespa had a oil-bath type of filter.... why would Mercedes not opt for them?
Can anyone tell me where to get on of the K&N filters?

Greeney,
Found the K&N website:
Here you can find the model that will suit your GWagen:
http://www.knfilterchargers.com/search/appsearch.aspx
(I believe that it is 38-9118):

And here you can find the retailers:

I'll probably buy one for use exclusively on the road.
Cheers,
Hi,
Just taken delivery and have fitted my new K+N Filter.
Sourced from YB Filters, originally found on Ebay. A guy called Mark Yates was found to be very helpful. Contact him at sales@ybfilters.co.uk.
Too soon to tell any real difference with mpg, however perception of smoother power delivery on my TB Turbo G300D
As the miles creep onward i'll give a better opinion.
Cheers from Ireland.
Just thought I would let you know that I met a fellow 300GD owner today and he swears by his K & N filter. He keeps the regular one for when he does serious off-roading and just swaps them over. I think I may do the same, as he is boasting 26 mpg and slightly quicker performance.
What do you think?
I think I am going to do exactly what your friend did and order the K&/N and just swap the filter with the original one when going off-road... in the end this only represents 5% of the use of the car and I could still save a lot of fuel for the remaining 95%.
Cheers,
My filter arrived (and I fitted it) today. It is model 33-2642 (suitable for the OM602 and OM603 engines fitted to the 463 Gs).
I had received a quotation from K&N Filters of £44,09 + VAT (plus delivery) and had it ordered from YB Filters (recommended by Buckalec, sales@ybfilters.co.uk ), for £44.99 inc VAT and delivery (a saving of £7.81 or 14.79 %). So from that point of view they are highly recommendable.
Now I'll check performance and mpg and will report back here.
Cheers
Might just be an idea to keep an idea on the temperature as these have less restriction/better airflow and may subsequently lean out the mixture...
Q 1. Where is the oil bath filter on a G
Q 2. If you are going to get more gas in what will you do to speed it,s exit.
Q 3. Why mess with a pefectly good design that prevents water and dust getting into your engine.
Bill:
I sort of was waiting for you...
Q 1. Where is the oil bath filter on a G
Don't know what you mean.... the K&N filter is made to the exact measure of the factory one.
Q 2. If you are going to get more gas in what will you do to speed it,s exit
Well, for a start I did put a new S/S exhaust system bar for the first silencer and it now gets rid of the exhaust fumes much more efficiently than before.
Q 3. Why mess with a pefectly good design that prevents water and dust getting into your engine.
Oh, yes, of course but by that same token we would all keep our GWagens totally standard or woudn't we? The water-ingress prevention system remains intact in my car... as for the dust, yes I'll be swapping the K&N for the factory standard when on an off-road day.
Yours tirelessly,
Hi J how you doing nice to hear from you, still can't understand why you choose to live here and not in the beutiful country full of elegant people good food good wine and above all good manners.
Q1 miss-read your earlier input
Q2 Does the K&N filter have the same design ie a rubbr seal at the back and the vanes maybe you could send me a pic.
Q3 I am allways interested in change for improvement especialy performance but not necceseraly economy and some times neccessity. I have a K&N fitted to my300tdi for the latter but am redesigning the air filter box to incorporate better protection against water ingrese and am looking at the cyclonic filter we used to fit to BRIXMIS vehicles and are still an option on the BW Wolf. (Aha So thats where Dyson got his idea)
Oil bath filters are great I have operated many types of military vehicles with them installed they are a prerequisit in desert and high humidity conditions but not in sub zeros, draw back is they are so efficient at filtering out dust and water that they need frequent attention, for a soldier that is just another task in a long list, for a civvy another pain in the !!!!!!!!
As ever mate

I told you once... I did such a lousy job for my company in Spain that they punished me with transferring me to the UK -and yet they disguised it as a promotion-. I am still assessing whether to complain to my company's Code of Conduct Compliance Officer...

This is the pic for the filter of the OM603 engine as fitted to the GWagen (exactly as standard):
You may check the type you need for any engine application in this link:

See a graphic of the air intake as fitted to my car:
Cheers
See like I said, a superb design, superior to any thing fitted to any vehicle in similar class.
Now if you look at the MB filter it is like a concertina if you flatten it out it is at least twice the area, that is the area that does the filtering, perfect, I remain to be convinced that K&N can improve on that.

Spain AAAhhh blissful, I love the sun.
I think most people change to K&N filters because of the power & MPG improvements, rather then increased filtering performance. The trouble is some go from a dirty standard filter to a new K&N, and then over estimate perfomance of their new K&N filter.
A friend of mine has a VW which is slighly modded, he did a dyno on it with a K&N and the standard paper filter and the OEM stock paper filter yielded better power and torque results
Just my 2c worth
Thanks for the heads up on that. I tend to do a fair bit of off-roading, so will aviod it.
