Is there a way of testing front CV joints without stripping everything down? Sure mine has excess play, but is there anything to listen for? How easy is replacement?

If you hear a clicking sound with the steering on full lock L or R then they are gone. Until then, keep pumping grease into the hub is the only preventative m/tence

wold that work? I thought the CV joints were sealed in rubber boots inside the swivel housing and the grease only to help limit water ingress?

Yes, you're right. Can't easily maintain them then.

Except that the boots have probably failed so pumping grease in May delay the inevitable.

Not too sure if they are the same or even alike but I had both my front and short rear cv joints go on my 300 GD, Dave Mac props in Coventry offer a very good collect and repair service, it was around £120 per prop as I recall. I could hear a funny dull rattle sound on mine. Hope this helps.

As Roly has mentioned; if you get clicking noises on either full lock then the CV is gone (more prominent under load or power). The CV is covered by a boot so unless it has disintegrated or perished away you can not get more grease into it.

Aside from excessive bearing play you can get the same in the Kingpin bearings so be careful in distinguishing between bearing or kingpin play.
