I just got my first G!! It seems pretty clean 1992 100k, with fairly full service history. My local garage checked it over and thought it sound. Only question was that the air con was described as drained and needing recharged. My local garage were unsure where/what to do.... any thoughts welcome

463 air con question

Martin,

The aircon of my G needs recharging as well. Problem A is that the gas that was used back in the early nineties (R12) eats up the ozone layer and it's therefore banned from the EU. Problem B is that the replacement gas is not fully compatible with the system which needs to be slighlty modified before recharging.

I was quoted £ 250 last year for both the conversion and the recharging and by the time I had decided to splash the money the waether had cooled up and I couldn't be bothered anymore. I am sure that I wouldn't pay the two grand that the aircon was when my car was new but since the aricon is already there, I'd probably invest the 250 quid this year.

There are loads of aircon specialist shops here in the south. I was surprised to learn that a second shop opened the other day in my village (2,000 souls) so I don't think that it will be a big deal for you to find one close to where you live.

Cheers,
