460 auto torque converter housing drain plug missing
Noticed that drain plug was missing so currently not driving, have not checked level of gearbox oil yet, but cant figure out implications from documentation. Could this lead to loss of fluid and/or damage and where could I source a replacement drain plug and sealing ring? Any advice to get back on the road would be appreciated, thanks
The torque converter is a rotating part. Its drain plug is usually accessed through an access port in the bell-housing, once it's rotationally aligned with it.
If you loose too much oil, you will loose all drive from your auto gearbox and the vehicle will not move.
Check the fluid level with the dipstick: Engine running, hand-brake on, gear-selector in P or N.
The torque converter has a separate drain plug (No.6, below):
isn't the purpose of this to drain out any water after driving through deep water
Well, yes, the large round plastic plug in the bell-housing for access to the torque converter drain-plug as on the W463 is just that, but I think that on the W460 auto gearbox, the type 720.1, the bell housing has a grated access area and the drain plugs in question, here in the original post, may actually be for the transmission fluid (to drain the pump or test pressure).
However, easy enough to check the fluid level to see what's happened.
Thanks guys, info very helpful, checked fluid level and OK, will source parts specified
