300 gd 1993 engine oil leak onto alternator
Can anyone help? My car went into merc for a new alternator but I'm told alternator is fine.however there is oil leaking from engine onto alternator causing car to lose power and cut out. They aren't sure yet whether it's head gasket but I thought these engines were bull it proof and it's only done 80000 miles? Any help please to diagnose oil leak ?

Is yours the om 603 engine 12 valve 6 cylinder
Send me a pic of oil leak please and is it definitley a 3.0 not a 3.5 motor

Could just be the rocker cover gasket got a bit loose , very easy to check? Does it use oil? There were some head gasket issues but most likely to have been sorted by now.
Yes just had a look it's the 300 gds 2998 cc and the engine number starts with 603
yeah its on v5 or engine block , should start with 603 any pictures of oil leak?
It's still sitting at the garage so I'll ask them to take a picture of it

If you look for yourself you will see where oil is coming from
I would be shocked if the head was leaking that badly
In simple terms look where oil filler cap is. The big aluminium box it fits to is the rocker cover and there is a gasket it sits on. Look here for leaks
The next part is the cylinder head and there is a square lump that sticks out on drivers side if rhd and i have seen them weep a bit but not pour out oil enough to soak alternator
By the square lump on head there is also the tensioner bolt for timing chain, Check that its not leaking also as its directly above alternator, It has a simple washer to seal it
Have a look and let us know and perhaps a picture

Are you sure that it is oil? Sometimes the water pump can spray fluid out that side of the engine if it gets old/tired. It can look like oil spatters on the alternator breather pipe.

Well I'm now told the engine oil leak is minimal. It's the power steering box that was leaking.
ive only just bought the car and driven it 150 miles whilst breaking down 5 times.
im now told it might be old fuel causing it to run lumpy and cut out if it's been sitting around so I've been told to try and find out if there is a fuel flush recommended for this diesel.slight air bubbles in clear fuel line pipe maybe due to recent filter change! Mercedes can't locate the problem, alternator, battery, fuel pump all seems ok!!
Does it stop without reason? How much fuel is in it? Is there less than a 1/3 of a tank in it? If so probably tank internally broken, not serious but means always keep above 1/3. Or possibly internal filter in tank is blocked? Though that would be rare.

I'm not sure how I tell what type of engine I have? Is it the log book?
