Please help me out on this one as I am confused
I am looking to replace the 5 cylinder diesel enigne in my G with a 2.9 TD.
i was talking to my friendly neighbour and scrapyardowner about this.
According to him they are fitted to Sprinter vans but have as he calls it a 'brain'
which I think means it is not all mechanical.
Does anyone have more information on this ie what vans were fitted with the all mechanical 2.9 TD engine?
Or alternatively which cars were fitted with the original 5 cylinder turbodiesel engine?
Thank you very much for your time.

regards

Richard

2.9 turbo-diesel engine question

There is no mechanical version of the 2.9 TD engine. The n/a versions of that engine (OM602) fitted to some versions of the old T1 commercial and the 290GD, have mechanical fuel injection.
There is a turbo version of the 5 cyl 3.0 litre engine (OM617) fitted in early 80's E class (W123) models, & S class, but only in lhd..

2.9 turbo-diesel engine question

Thanks for the reply Mark.
I read in one of the previous posts about the OM 602 DE29 LA being non electronical?
And if they are, how difficult would it be to fit one to my G?
Just wondering out loud......

2.9td into G...

I have researched this a fair bit. Mainly because I have a 312d Sprinter with this engine and it is an absolute beauty of an engine. Hauls the 2t Sprinter along at nearly 100mph real speed, yet slow down a bit and you're getting close to 40mpg.

Troubles involved are the following:
-Engine is higher, so bonnet will have to be cut and fitted with a scoop... :D
-As far as I could find out from original MB-G internal literature, the engines in the G have been specially adapted to cope with severe inclines during off-roading - especially in the areas of oil scavenging and -supply.
- G-gearbox probably won't match so need sprinter 'box and custom drive shaft
- Mountings will have to be made up all the way
- Reason why these engines are so brilliant is direct injection with electronically controlled pump and boost.

All-in-all, one will need a complete sprinter to do this job. And in that we're competing against thousands of sprinter owners who want to upgrade or replace...

But the worst is that it can all be destroyed on the first severe incline through lack of oil...

I'd say better stick with what it came with

One of our new members, Tanex, has put a OM602 sprinter engine in his 460 G. See his post at http://www.gwoa.co.uk/node/622#comment-3153

Very interesting!!!
It would be nice to hear about mountings/gearbox/cooling modifications etc...
Might just attempt the same so a bit of info would be very much appreciated
Strange that the intake manifold on my 312d is completely different in that it crosses over the valve cover, thus making a much higher engine than the one in the picture...???

Tanex has used 461 G wagen mounts and also had to buy the correct sump and inlet manifold to fit. John (Tanex) is covering the ground that many of us have thought about and I for one thank him.

Can't wait for the project to be completed and hope to cross the Tasman to actually check it out when he does!

Thanks again John for all the information you have made available on this project.

You are most welcome Will share all i have found out. Have even burnt to CD all the service info I could gleam in case others want it.

Here is a p[hoto taken today. Plastic pipe from Intake manifild to turbo was not to my liking so a SS is there instead. Rad and fan from 460 are back in place with no modifications. Tight fit for lower rad hose on right side as steeering box is there.. May have to be a SS elbow for part of the distance as it travels over the alternator. Apart from that no major hiccups.

this will only work for a wee while

Please amend your profile. You are still shown as having a J-reg 300 GDS.

Would like a photo of the fan shroud if possible as the fan iver over to the left on the sprinter and original shroud cannot be used
