As the title suggests I am looking possibly to update the exterior look of my 84' 460 lwb 280ge. I am in 2 minds as to weather to give it a more modern look or wether to keep it 100% original! Would the car lose value if I gave it a more modern look! I really am stuck in between keeping it all original and giving it a modern exterior Facebook! Cheers for opinions and advice.

I am one for keeping things original. However, there are many that have done exactly what you suggest, in order to help sell their cars as AMG 63 or Brabus look-alikes. The thing is that if you were to do this with original, OEM parts it would cost you an awful lot. So many people take the route of Chinese or east European styling parts which are not always the best quality or fit, or indeed very tasteful (in my opinion, that is), Then they add 22" wheels. You will see one or two like that on Autotrader.

Keep it original

FFS do not turn it into a Mongrel !

Okay maybe with an engine change to a turn turbo diesel to get it to move quicker and more economical bigger tyres and maybe an inch lift in springs but that's it

Absolutely ditto the above... plus an OM606 fitted by someone competent.

My view is don’t do anything that can’t be undone and keep the original parts so it can be restored that way you have the best of both worlds.

If you intend keeping it for a long time go the turbo diesel route rather than tarting it up, the ge280's very lovely engine is also its Achilles heel due to its thirst, a nice 606a conversion will give more power and more than twice the miles per gallon. The other issue you have to contend with is rust, there's little point to new decoration if what is already there is rusty, which large parts of any w460 are likely to be as even the youngest one is approaching 30.

[A 617a turbo diesel would be more contemporary with a w460 than a 606 but not as nice or as powerful]
