280ge 1983 Running very rich/lean
Hi guys need some help,
My W460 280ge is drinking petrol like it owns an oil field, to fill the tank it costs about £70 out of that local driving i am getting 60 to 70 miles thats just over £1.00 a mile, its really killing my pocket. It was parked up for 7 years, i have fully restored it over 4 months, however it is still a bit rough when idling first thing in the morning like it is missing or when i am at lights etc, it happens during when the engine is warm also. i have changed the leads 3 times, new dis cap twice, new rotor arm, new spark plugs 3 times, oil change 7 times. After all that it is still running a bit rich, i can smell the un burnt fuel via the exhaust as the smell is very strong. i have been told its the mixer for the fuel and the air that i need to adjust can anybody tell me how to go about in the right way if possible.
Some before and after pictures of my G wagon attached
Thanks
Nice looking truck!! Great colour and the wheels set it off a treat..
If you have no issues starting etc then maybe one of a few things for me...
Mixture is a possibility but usually you would have a very erratic idle either lumpy, fast or poor cold start?
I would check the vacuum system for both integrity of the pipes and the layout to make sure it is plumbed up correctly
Pipes can split and crack with age and any air being dragged in will upset the mixture etc...
Pipes can also go soft and close up under load so don't just inspect for leaks and splits, make sure that they are in good order, replace any that look suspect
Also i would test the WUR (Warm Up Regulator) to make it is functioning correctly and is shutting the fuel off after the cold start.
Maybe also check that the Cold Start (7th) Injector is shutting off and not gone incontinent!!
Guess on that count that the injectors could also be leaking and over fueling?
Does it smoke (Grey/Black) as well as smell?
Hope that helps

I see on some of the pictures that the Air Box and Manifolds are on the garage floor...
I would definitely check that the vacuum pipe work has been reconnected properly and that the Air Box is sat straight and secure and the pipe work is sealed onto the engine induction correctly etc
Any pipes connected badly or not seated right will cause issues!
The M110 280 engine is prone to vacuum / idle / mixture issues when its not put together right for obvious reasons! When its good its a good smooth engine, just a tad thirsty...
Some of the vacuum pipes especially under the Inlet Manifold are very hard to see properly and get installed right, especially if you are not sure what is there and how they are supposed to be... don't assume also that just because you carefully labeled all the pipes you removed and fitted back in the same place, that they were correct in the first place... it could have been parked up 7 years ago for the same running issue and i have seen many 280's that run in a fashion but with pipe work plumbed up wrong!! Start from scratch and check everything...

That colour combination looks awesome!
Hope you get things sorted sure the above gives you plenty to go on!^
The excessive consumption is going to be fixed permanently with a lovely 3 litre turbo Diesel. The truck is being delivered to me on Sunday, the transformation starts Monday!!!
Any idea on how much this petrol to diesel transplant is going to cost??
I had similar problems with ,my other G280 and the problem was cured by a: changing the warm up regulator and b: having the entire injection system checked by an authorized Bosch workshop. Having done all that, I am lucky if I can get get anything better than 16 mpg on good day. Gs are great but unfortunately rather thirsty beasts.
