Dear all,

I recently bought a 250GD W460 from '89.  When I turn the steering wheel, the steering wheel  doesn't "come back" to it's original position.  This makes tight corners quite difficult because you need to "turn back" the steering wheel. Could this be the power steering that's broken/leaking?

Thanks in advance.

Can you find a leak?

Is the Steering Fluid reservoir full? (On top of the Pump of the Engine)

It would seem more orientated towards wear in the Steering Linkage / Tie Rod or

Failed Steering Damper or

Seized UJ's on the Steering Shaft to the Steering Box (Upper and Lower)

Tyre Pressure / Condition or

Steering Box out of adjustment (be careful if attempting this - leave to a professional is the best option)

Re: 250 GD Servo steering problem

Had a chance to check. As far as i can see all rods etc. are still straight. One thing i noticed is a small leak in the steering damper and some dark oily spots on the axle. ( attached a picture of the location)

I haven't had the opportunity to check the servo fluid because i don't have the special spanner required. Will try to check this weekend.

Hi

Steering Damper leaking will be a big factor, remove it and do a short steady test drive to see if the problem goes away or gets worse?

Cylinder is Diff Lock actuator / Slave cylinder..

Obviously picture is just reference and you have not removed the body? cheeky

I would try spraying WD40 etc over the steering column uj's first, might need a really good soaking, then try removing the steering damper if no improvement.

Should be part of every service , spraying those Steering uj's, pain when they seize up

Steering failing to centre means the steering box has been over adjusted.

Re: 250 GD Servo steering problem

Thanks all for the feedback. After yesterdays mud-playday the problem seemed to have fixed itself. Steering wheel centers again and no weird steering anymore. smiley

I'll remember the WD40 advise
