I'm in the market for one more G. My 1981 SWB 3L diesel cabrio is just too small and dusty for long trips into Africa.

A good condition 1991 230GE lwb 5-door came up for sale.
I'll also be using it as a daily driver to work and back.(I'll have to sell my C180 to buy this one)

Is the 230ge engine capable driving a lwb?
What highway cruising speeds am I looking at? (Hopefully 70mph)
What does the fuel consumption looks like?
How does it perform off-road with no low down torque?
Is the 230ge engine reliable?

Thanks
Johann

Being a 1991 model it can only be either a 461 (very rare, only 97 LWBs including LHD and RHD were made) or 463 (less rare, 134 LWBs in total were made). Either way, the engine gives 126 HP @ 5,000 rpm and 190 Nm @ 4,000 rpm. This does not compare too badly with the figures of a 463 300 GD (113 HP @ 4,600 rpm and 191 Nm @ 2,700rpm), except for the fact that the max torque is very much up the revs.

The maximum speed of the 463 is 90 mph (145 Km/h) so I would assume that a cruising speed of 70 mph is perfectly feasible. Fuel consumption is between 16 and 22 mpg if you are tender with your right foot.

But yes, you are night. No low down torque for off-roading.

No reliability problems. This is a truly proven engine.

Cheers

230GE Questions

Thanks for the feedback!
Funny that most G owners I talk to advice me against petrol G's.
The best reason for me so far has been, that mostly only diesel is available up north in Africa. The fuel bill will also be considerable on a 10 000km trip.
A heavy loaded LWB 230GE in rough off-road conditions will also tend to have overheating problems.
Thus I'll think I'll give this 230ge a skip

Patience is a virtue. I'll wait till 2005 when they stop making G's and import a nice 461,463 RHD 300GD from the UK.

Let me know Jesus when yours is up for sale
