Hello,

I have a 1980 LHD W460 300D and attempted to change a track rod end with a new one (part number 631 338 05 10) which has a 20mm thread! only it was too small, I measured the one I removed and it has a 22mm diameter thread!!! Is this an odd ball size? will the other track rod ends be the same?

Hope one of you G men can help?

Best regards

Mark...

Re: 22mm Track Rod End?

Hi Mark

That could be one of the earliest G's in the UK? Chassis serial must be sub 010000?

Could really do with the chassis number as a starting point, however at 35 years old and a general wear part maybe its been modified from how it left the factory anyway!!

That number A631 338 05 10 is a really old number that changes to A460 330 12 35 at Germany

It does not appear (A631 338 05 10) on the EPC listed for a G Wagen but is shown for the non UK MB100/120/140/160/180 series of vans so will be a similar part.

It is not possible to buy that old part number from MB as they will supply the new supercession A460 330 12 35

Did your "new" part have that number on the box and if so where did you get it from?

There seems maybe a conflict in that supercession in that while both having an M20 thread to the bar i have the A631 338 05 10 as an M14 thread to the stub on the MB100 van and the A460 330 12 35 as an M16?

In either case no good due to the M20 thread to the bar?

The very early 460's pre 80 G ran with the M14 / M20 combo with the later 460's ran with M16 / M20 and the late 460's and 463's have an M16 / M24 version... of course at 35 years any combo is possible, especially if its had a later axle fitted?

Confused.com?

Posted this list some time ago....PM me if  you are stuck, we have a few in stock to pattern up...Gav

Hello all…

I have been helping a few people out with Track Rod End Joint and Steering Drag Link Joint part numbers.

The MB dealers seem to really struggle with this area and often advise that a complete link is the only option.

In some cases this is true, obviously if it is a crimped/fixed joint you require.

However listed below are some options that I have worked out across the range.

Unfortunately the only easy way is to take measurements from the old joint, therefore a good look underneath or stripping is required to help identify the joint.

Quote from an earlier request….

“Just to confirm, are we on the Track Rod Bar (Wheel to Wheel) or Drag Link Bar (Steering Box to Wheel)?

Always difficult to work these out, as it has probably had a replacement bar at some point in its life and there are different joints for different bars and sometimes the joint is not available at all and a complete bar is the only answer!!! Then there are the crimped joints where obviously no end is available!!!

The only way to be 99% sure is to get the part number off the bar!!! It is printed on to the bar near the centre; they usually survive pretty well but need a good clean down with a cloth etc. It will be somewhere near the middle of the bar normally. Then I can track it down, but a brief breakdown as follows….”

It therefore can help tremendously to identify the joint required by identifying the bar fitted to the truck …

Complete Bar possibilities are…

460 RHD Standard Complete Track Rod Bar…

You are looking for probably A460 330 17 03 or A460 330 18 03 but could be an early A460 330 07 03

Or A460 330 09 03

463 RHD Standard Complete Track Rod Bar…

You are looking for probably A463 330 05 03 or A463 330 06 03

463 RHD Wide Track (Standard on Later 463’s) Complete Track Rod Bar…

You are looking for probably A463 330 03 03 or A463 330 04 03

460 RHD Complete Standard Drag Link Bar…

You are probably looking at A463 460 03 15 or A463 463 06 15 but could be the early A460 463 51 15

Or A460 463 53 15 or A463 463 07 15

463 RHD Complete Standard Drag Link Bar…

You are probably looking at A463 460 01 05 or A463 463 06 15

463 RHD Wide Track (Standard on later 463’s) Standard Drag Link Bar…

You are probably looking at A463 460 02 05 or A463 463 03 15

There are in true MB style other options of both the 460/461/463 models if you need any help please PM me with your chassis number.

Some Joint possibilities are…

A601 330 04 35 External LH Thread M20 to bar with M14 thread nut on the joint
A601 330 05 35 External RH Thread M20 to bar with M14 thread nut on the joint
A001 330 44 35 External LH Thread M20 to bar with M16 thread nut on the joint (This may actually be RH Thread – EPC contradicts itself)
A460 330 12 35 External RH Thread M20 to bar with M16 thread nut on the joint (This may actually be LH Thread – EPC contradicts itself)
A000 330 86 35 External LH Thread M24 to bar with M16 thread nut on the joint
A000 330 85 35 External RH Thread M24 to bar with M16 thread nut on the joint

A602 330 02 35 Internal LH Thread M24 to bar with M16 thread nut on the joint

All thread pitches are Metric 1.5mm

All these are available from MB some UK some Germany
