2007 G SWB LHD,CDI,

Just fitted a reconditioned Steering Box, (or rather Mercedes in Worcester did the fitting) I supplied

The box? Now I have a light a warning signal coming on at full Rh lock,ESP,the pitman arm is in the

correct position, there is a vibration on the front wheels at 65 MPH, all this at a cost of £1,310.64,

Been on to Mercedes, they say bring it back, and told me I will have to pay again? they tell me there is nothing on their system for this vehicle as they were never sold in this country,my reply?why did you agree to carry out the work in the first place! all this in the last two days!!if I can find out why this ESP light is coming on without taking it to MB  this would be a solution for me! Any ideas from anyone! Regards Raymondo?

Re: 2007 SWB 463 P/Box,

There is a steering angle sensor which is part of the ESP system. I imagine that this may have been misaligned during the replacement of the steering box.

Normally on disconnecting the battery, the ESP warning light will come on and this requires turning the steering from lock to lock to re-calibrate it.

If the light is permanently on or comes on at full-lock, as you mention, the steering shaft is not properly aligned.

All MB vehicles since about 2002 have this and any decent MB garage should knwo about it. It is NOT specific to the G or, for that mater, the G400..

Vibration at 60 - 70 mph is typical on the G when there is unbalance in the wheels/tyres or the front steering damper is worn.

Raymondo

I have edited your subject title for clarity and moved Arnie's reply to your post in the classified section here. I will shortly delete your technical query from the classified section !

I think Arnie gave you good advice to your original question I am not sure why you decided to post  the same question again.

Re: Steering box problems!

The ESP light is related to the steering-angle sensor. It may have been disturbed or incorrectly re-fitted after changing the steering box. Normally, on reconnecting the battery, one will see the ESP light and it is then required to rotate the steering from full-lock to full-lock to re-calibrate the system and the light should then remain off.

The ESP system is the same on all Mercedes, and indeed the current RHD G's, so that's not a valid excuse from the dealer.

It's also possible to trigger the ESP light from faulty wheel sensors, but with this you will also have the ABS warning light.

My guess is that the steering shaft is incorrectly aligned or the steering angle sensor  was damaged during the swap of the steering box.

Not sure why you have posted this on the classified ad section rather than as a technical query?
