Hi Can anyone help please I own a 1993 lwb g300 with the om603 non turbo engine. 4spd box Milage 195000. Car drives very well I have a concern that the vehicle won't change into 4th gear. I understand these vehicles are slow. (Very slow) but should I be hitting 3000rpm at 60mph on the motorway? Changes are smooth no winning gearbox is red. It just feels it needs another gear. Any thoughts Nick

Do you know when the auto box was last serviced, its got a fair mileage on it at 200k, it could need a change of filter and fluids

Re: 1993 g wagon g300 auto

I have a 4 speed auto petrol (230GE) and it also feels like it needs another gear.  I had a 5 speed manual 230GE and it was much better.

I suspect 3k in 4th @60mph for a 300GD is about right - but a member with the same can confirm (or check the spec).

Not sure if you are also saying there is a problem to get it into 4th?  You would know if you were still in 3rd.

Mine's a petrol and SWB so not really comparable but I also think that 3,000rpm @ 60mph is about right.

Are you sure that you're not in 4th? Don't forget that if you're in Drive then you are setting off in 2nd gear.

Hi yeah I've always said the early ones need another gear!

Maybe stick a Turbo on the car?

Maybe stick some fuel cleaner in it or maybe clean out the soot - hook it upto to  terra clean machine?

maybe.

Re: 1993 g wagon g300 auto
Hi Thanks firstly getting back to me. All points raised are noted. The car does change up twice hence the pulling away in second gear comment. Perhaps being a diesel I'm just aware of the noise more. I will service the gearbox anyway for shits and giggles. Any more thoughts please post. Little things I've found that might help in a resto. Mercedes 601 370b wiper spindles fit with simple mods. Use the outer case cut to length use orginal spindle. Paid £28 for one including seal kit. Beats any price. Full front wheel bearing kit one side £24.54. Ebay Better than £180 inc kit oem merc or auto factors £105 without kit. Anyone know best place to buy a exhaust please as mine is still on its orginal and thread bare. Thanks Nick

Definitely wouldn't worry about 3,000 rpm @ 60 mph.

I've just been out in mine (G300, petrol, SWB) and I'm at 3,500rpm @ 60 mph but no concerns that isn't how it should be.

Yes, but petrol/diesel - big rpm range difference. Petrol has another 3k to redline, whereas Diesel only 1k.

Really need another 300GD confirmation.  Preferably an auto one.  It wasn't clear initially it was a 4spd auto box question, but it is now.  I have a 230GE petrol auto and believe its about 3k rpm at 60mph (in 4th, auto).  But its having some work done so I can't verify, and also not diesel again :)

Re: 1993 g wagon g300 auto

Ah.

Must admit I've never hit the red line. 90mph at about 4,500 is usually where I feel comfortable. But maybe that's an age thing (me, not the G).wink

I keep meaning to ask - how do I get the comment that I'm replying to to appear in that nice grey box?

You hit 'quote' instead of reply, then trim down the text you are referring to and add your response after the end quote line.

Re: 1993 g wagon g300 auto

My manual 463, was doing indicated 70 mph on the speedo at 3500 rpm, tho sat nav says about 62 mph, so that would be correct,  had no qualms at holding 5000rpm except the diesel bill!

Re: 1993 g wagon g300 auto

Hi - If it's any help - my 1984 460 2.8 petrol 4 speed manual is doing just that speed and revs - I think this is about as much as you can expect from your auto 4 speed box as I think the results are about the same as a 4 speed manual box.

New to G wagens so I don't know much - hope this helps.

Cheers

John
