Hi

The ignition key only turns half way to 1 but I can not turn it further, all the way to 1 or 2.

This has never been a problem before, usually smooth to turn on.

Am I missing something?

Re: 1992 g class / ignition key wont turn

My partner called me out over 20 miles because her steering lock wouldn't work. It turned out the weight of the steering was still on the steering lock

A swift wiggle of the steering released it,  I take it you've done this?

If it is not as suggested above, it may be that the electrical switch attached to the ignition lock has become faulty / jammed .... Or it could be that the ignition lock barrel is worn. It is very easy to change the barrel if you can turn the key to the 1st position, but you must first order a new barrel from your local dealer.

What kind of key is it?

Having replaced one recently you would get a few goes before it would completely fail IMHO.

1. try the option in the above post
2. If that does not work, then a little squirt of a lubricant in the key hole to just make sure all the pins inside are moving.
3. Gently wiggle the key in - if its a 460 key BE CAREFUL as they are rather thinner than the 463's.
4. If it is a 463 key - again with the lube, then with a small hammer GENTLY tap the end of the key with a small hammer - not to jam it in, but really to get the pins to fall into place.

If all the above does fail then you will need a complete new ignition barrel if it is that. I have looked but can not find the post I placed when I had this issue - but great help from Gav Helme. You will need to provide some serial numbers with it and the VIN - good news is you get two new keys.

Since you mentioned that the key turns 1/2 way to position 1, try the above suggestions, but don't discount a jammed or stuck electrical switch. Thi s can be removed from the lock for testing
