1984 300gd steering lock
Can someone please let me in to the secret of removing the steering lock from the steering column?, I have (of course) loosened the clamp, but can't for the life of me figure out what is still preventing the lock from being withdrawn. I need to do this in order to investigate the valve for the fuel cut off system.

have you tried it with the key in (in pos 2)?
you have to remove the black housing, insert the key, put it into pos2 and insert a 2-3mm pin , on the side of the cylinder.
If you want to remove it completely, there is another small "rejecter on the backside of the cylinder (depending on modelyear) - push it.
I have to see if I can find the original Pictures and the description in German.

Hi Andy. I have just done this myself and it took a little while to work it out even with the workshop manual photo. Klaus is right, you do need the key turned in the lock to retract the column lock and then you need to loosen the collar holding the lock mechanisim to the column. Once the collar is loose try to loosen it off a bit more so that you can get it right out of the way - because under the collar is a small button (for want of a better word) that needs to be depressed while pulling the lock mechanism out of the column. The "button" is toward the back but if the collar is out of the way you should feel it. There is not a lot of clearance to pull this all the way out but with a bit of judicious removal of heating/air duct it will come.
There is also a post on the American Bulletin Board wich might help but the above should work for you.
If you are like me you are looking to replace the barrel. This is removed as per the instructions Klaus gave - which is (with key in the right place) the small hole hole on the side of the barrell housing. - Good Luck John
Hi Klaus and John,
Very many thanks for the info - I'd figured that there must be something like a release catch, but obviously I hadn't looked hard enough!
I'll have another go tomorrow.
Best wishes,
Andy.
